Thank you for the support. I haven’t heard or seen them since this morning but I ran errands today. Happy note Both my male and female bb’s were in the birdbath just now and are still feeding the babies in the bb house. Just 3 or 4 more days to go and they will fledge. Thank you again.
I have a new theory about the abandon baby birds. I heard them across my yard this morning but haven’t seen them. If something happened to one parent maybe the other parent was slow getting around to feeding all of them. Hopefully a miracle happens today and I’m going to hold onto that thought.
The babies in the bb house are 12 or 14 days old I left that out. Ive had a shoulder injury this year that has kept me from going on a daily basis. The baby birds followed the bluebird parents to the bluebird house and then just kinda fell to the ground because they couldn’t grasp onto the house. It helps when things go wrong just to have someone else’s thoughts.
Hopefully the baby bb’s will fledge within 3 or 4 days now and have a happy life.-

Ilovebluebirds.
The baby bb’s are about 13 or 14 days old now and I usually just stick my cell phone inside the top opening and take a picture.
I also do not have bird feeders but the area I live in along with the blueberry bushes, wild mulberry trees, blackberry bushes and other trees with berries provide the area with many birds. Thank you so very much for your thoughts. This is the first nest this year. They are a very light brownish color. No parents showed up to feed them yesterday. One baby bird landed in my flower pot flapping its wings chirping like it was saying here I am. I don’t see a happy ending but I do thank you very much for your thoughts. I do have mealworms out but they did not find them. They are waiting for the parents to feed them.
Normal people do not need to take time off. I spend a lot of time in the mornings and evenings watching to make sure both parents are around and accounted for. I’ve had some sad moments with the bluebird babies and have actually spend weeks crying when something goes wrong. Vacation from anything going wrong.
TY, I really like keeping an eye on them (sometimes to much maybe). I did have my bb house very close to my house because I had a camera on an electrical connection inside my house however I adopted a dog (tibetin terrior) and she wasn’t having any birds in her fenced in area. I have seen the hawks perch in trees very close to my house. I have many trees for them to keep watch. Also the parents go different distances to find food for the baby birds. I have blueberry bushes and ALL birds come to my yard to eat them. They really need to keep quite so the hawk doesn’t hear so many birds close by. I may take a bb vacation next year. I say that every year but never stand by it. Happy Blue birding.
I think it was a Broad Winged Hawk/Alabama. I’m pretty sure I have seen both parents going into the bb house this morning feeding so hopefully all is well for now. I also saw the hawk fly over my yard this morning. It lives in this area and I can usually hear it but sometimes its just sitting in spots watching for prey. I have unfortunately had a bb parent come up missing from time to time one time the male abandoned the baby bb’s when the female came up missing but one year the female continued to feed and they did fledge. I really really get upset when something goes wrong.
I had a camera in my bluebird house a few years ago and in the triple temps I could see the baby bluebirds laying on their backs with their beaks open but when it cooled off in the evenings they didn’t do that nor in the mornings. That was a good idea you had with the cold cloth. I actually made provision with a layer of vinyl on my bb house with a small screen about one inch from the top a few years back. I don’t have the camera in the bb house now but I do have eggs in the box but usually in these temps, I only have one egg to hatch.
I actually saw bb’s on top of the house today. Maybe they will hang around. Glad to know the stovepipe works because i have that and something that looks like a cone above it.
That is awesome you were able to get the snakes out. I’m terrified of snakes and have two snake guards on my bb house because they have caused a lot of tears for me. This is the first year in 6 years bb have not nested in my box but its ok they will come again. Happy bluebirding to both of you..
I haven’t bought the heated birdbath yet but I was in PetSmart that very day and they had a 20.00 heated water bowl for dogs and I grabbed it. I had 5 bluebirds getting sips of water from it this morning. Its 20 degrees this morning. I placed rocks inside for them to stand on but they mostly stayed on the edge of the bowl.
Awesome, thank you so very much and the link for both actually worked.
Oh ok, thank you. I wasn’t sure about them freezing their feathers. Thats good to know its not going to freeze them.
If you know the name brand, I’ll search that. I appreciate your help. Also did you use an extension cord?I live in Alabama and I do know people in Alabama who have the Martin houses set up but I don’t have that. I only have the one that the mealworms are in.
