Cari, was it monitored regularly? I’m asking since those dead babies weren’t found until after the others fledged. Did they have any signs of an attack? I think it’s possible that a HOSP might do that. Normally I think he’d kill them all so that he could have the box. It could have been chemicals.

I’ve never had experience at banding.

Where did you find that Lisa? All I saw was that blue jays will steal mealworms and attack adults. Mockers and sometimes Robins even do the same thing. By attack I don’t believe she means kill but just harass. Is that what you saw?
Tammy
Yes, the nests are always flat compact after fledging time,
Tammy
Welcome, Cari.

Yep, Whitney. See about moving that box now. We’ll walk you through it if you get the materials and make what you need.
Here’s directions. http://bluebirdnutcafe.yuku.com/topic/5934/How-I-install-a-nest-box#.WV0x42jyuUkTammy
Today I had a similar experience. I had one box on the trail that had babies that were maybe a week from fledging. I finally got around to checking it again and there’s a brand new nest in it with 4 eggs. I don’t see any sign of the old nest at all. There’s no sign that the babies didn’t fledge so I’m assuming they did but that was one flat compact nest in there and had to be a lot of work to clean it out. Weird.

Why do you have reason to think she’s still around? I just figured you have seen her. If you haven’t seen her for days then I think something happened to her and all you can do is just keep doing what you are doing. But, only watching for 30 minutes will not tell you enough. How old are they?
Tammy
I’ve never heard of blue jays being an issue, Martha. They raid open nests not nestboxes. I have tons at my house and they are not an issue. House Sparrows and House Wrens are an issue though.
Tammy
aww..sweet.
Tammy
How long have you been watching at one particular time, Cari?
Tammy
I’ve had 5 or 6 eggs every nesting with my white egg laying female but none of my other boxes have ever had 6 eggs.
Tammy
Fun! I used to have a three brood female but this one only nests twice.
Tammy
Sometimes the do have more than one brood but unless they are banded it’s impossible to know if it’s the same pair or a new pair taking over the box. But it’s late in the season for TRES anyway. I agree with Carol.
Tammy
Just removing their nest does not really work.Theyll keep building over and over again. Trapping works.
