Theres always an influx of juvie HOSP in August every year here so it’s a good time to trap.
Tammy
i agree with Gin. By now you would know because they wouldn’t be alive if they aren’t being fed.
Tammy
Whew! Glad they are all OK.

Mine have always done what Carols do. They leave for a couple of weeks and then bring the babies back. Sometimes I don’t see the babies again. My ver last brood disappears until the end of September and then I see them again and they all overwinter with me.
Tammy
Congrats on your third brood. It’s been awhile since I’ve had 3 broods.

White millet is my choice but you can try bread crumbs and see if that might draw HOSP in more than natives….or popcorn, Frenchfries etc. As suggested make sure you have water and food in the trap. It seems like once I have some HOSP in there I catch less natives. I sometimes have to release a native bird daily. Always keep a decoy in the holding area if you can. HOSP draws more HOSP.

It’s better than nothing Susan. But the cylinder stove pipe baffle is better. Here’s what Sialis says about them. “Raccoons have been known to get around metal cone guards on poles, even those that are 36″ in diameter.” “To be effective against raccoons, a conical baffle (also called a Jensen-Arndt or “coolie hat” coon guard) needs to be at least 3 feet in diameter. Note that even this size does not deter large snakes (over five feet long) well. Conical baffles may be harder to make, more expensive, and less effective than a stovepipe baffle, and sharp edges can be a problem around children and during monitoring. Some raccoons learn to get around them. However, they are probably the easiest baffle to put up when a nestbox is mounted on a wooden post.”

Honestly Susan, I don’t think that’s going to help much in regards to the blues…you never know where they are going to land and you can’t have pop sickle sticks all over your property. Although, if you do that we would all like a photo!! But it might keep them out of certain area…I’ve never heard of it.
Cats. I would think that cats do not just hunt because they’re hungry but because it is just instinct. But I really don’t know.
Tammy
Yep…you did well. Hope those other banded babies made it!
Tammy
Yay, Whitney!!

I’m always kind of glad when my TRES leave. I’m glad to have them but they are overwhelming at times. I still have one nest with babies because the HOSP pecked their other brood of babies to death.
Tammy
I noticed that my page wouldn’t load too….kept buffering and never loaded. Weird.
Tammy
I’ve never looked at their arms. I’ll have to take notice next time I see one. A friend (facebook) had raccoons raid his purple martin gourds or housing. They climbed over a predator guard (5 ft long 6 ft wide PVC pipe but not wobbling) and bit off the heads of all his martins that didn’t scare off when it came up. It came several times and devastated that rack full of martins.
Tammy
Blue jays just can’t get in that size of hole. You’d have to have a bigger hole for it to be a problem.
Tammy
Did you put them on your barbed wire fence post or a separate post. It’s really easy and you won’t regret doing it the right way. http://bluebirdnutcafe.yuku.com/topic/5934/How-I-install-a-nest-box#.WWQ_A7EpChA
