Dene, where are you from? What state?
Tammy
Sweet. I wish I had dees nes In here. What type of box are they in. I might move my PVC box that my TRES use up near my house …..maybe they’ll take to that.
Tammy
Wow…I know that males can have two females at one time but I’ve never known anyone that’s actually seen it. Really weird too how they cleaned their own nest out. Not unbelievable at all but not really the norm!

Congrats on your third nesting. How many did you have in brood one and two. I would be very surprised if they were all females unless you had only a couple per brood.
Tammy
Check in ththe morning. They should be gone. If not you might have to take the bluebirds out and put new nesting material in the box with some Sevin underneath and then put it back in.
Tammy
No, most of the time it’s definitely a HOSP fault because hes been actually seen competing for that box. And even though bluebirds will do these type of things it isn’t that common. By nature a HOSP is aggressive and invasive and bluebirds aren’t. Plus the HOSP beak has a little hook on the end of it which makes killing easier. Also bluebirds are very territorial so it’s unusual to see a third adult bluebird around when there’s a nesting pair.

Most of the time, Meg. But some Purple martin landlords in the south that have rat snakes have found that they are so long that they can breach a guard so some people use netting around their pole too. But I’d say it’s effective most of the time.
Tammy
Sweet.

I love the shoe box idea. I think that was Gin’s idea initially.
Tammy
I understand that sentiment but they need you! It does get easier after time. I use to cry at every baby that died etc but now I don’t. I’m sad but it just doesn’t hit me as hard. We’ll understand if you do take it down but are voting on you sticking with it.
Tammy
Use whatever you feel yoi want to use. I don’t want to negate anyones experience here with D? Some people swear by it but there’s been some concern with the Purple Martin Conservation Association about the teeny babies inhaling the DE and it really messing them up. There’s suppose to be an article on it but I haven’t seen it yet so I’m not sure if it exists or not. SOmeone told me they would try to find it. If I get it I’ll share it with others here. So I was just giving you another option.
Tammy
Whitney, your box has become a fast food stop now so you’ll want to change it over to a slick metal pole with a predator guard soon. There’s a decent chance your birds might try one more nesting. Whatever got them knows that box means food now.
Tammy
About time! Too bad they aren’t that aggressive when the wrens are removing eggs!!
Tammy
The rule of thumb is that they will hatch 12 – 14 days after the last egg is laid. So you really are only one day later than that. Or am I misunderstanding something? So definitely do not give up at this point.
Tammy
I’m so distracted lately and forgot about my promise to get back with you. I sent you a PM. If you feel comfortable calling me (phone number is in message) that would be more practical. But if not I’ll type it out for you later today. Your mailbox is on the right hand side of the page. You might have to scroll down to find it.
