I know other years they had 2 hatching where do all those babies go? Also if this is this is the case I should clean the nest out in Jan. even though it’s cold then. Do I wait for a ram couple of days? I had a female wild turkey and 8 babies in my front yard this morning about 40 feet from my picture window. They love wheat. I also had a hummingbird come to my picture window this morning to the exact spot I had the feeder up last year. I am late getting it up but put it up this afternoon.
Happy to report my bluebirds did come back after about my 3 weeks and are doing well now. Does it hurt to look in the box once to see how many babies they have? I will say this much they much have thought a predator destroyed their nesting as anytime another bird came close to their nesting they tagged teamed it and sent them packing. A happy bluebird/wild turkey /humming bird watcher in rural Pa.
Not sure how my bluebirds survive here in Southwest Pa but mine have been here every since I set the nest up about 3-4 years ago. I guess mine went to Bluebird boot camp somewhere.
I did it 2-3 weeks ago instead of back in Jan. No they weren’t adding to it as they have been in it for 4-5 years now and only added to it last year or the year before. Still hoping they come back.
Well they have been in that nest for the last 4-5 years ever since I put it up. So I am hoping that they come back. I had no bugs or mosquitoes around when they were here. lol
To say that I am big time disappointed would be an understatement. I removed the nest like everybody suggested. I am not sure where my bluebirds migrated to but they didn’t rebuild the nest and haven’t been around for about 2-3 weeks. Hopefully they will come back.

I used on of those metal green post/poles that has the triangle on the bottom. You can buy them at Home Depot/Lowes or any hardware store. Good luck

Look at the post above for sialis.org it has lots of info.
Well I for sure don’t know much about bluebirds. What I do know is that the bluebirds showed up within 1-2 weeks after the box was set up. I don’t know much history about my bluebirds other than they must have been to a bluebird boot camp somewhere. The very first season a wren family tried taking over the box and they sent them packing. They have resided in the box ever since. What would be a good guess on your part as to when to clean the nest box out since they need it for winter warmth. I know the very first season they had 2 hatchlings. I guess my question is where do the babies end up going every year that they hatch out. Somewhat clueless in Newburg Pa.
Carol I am not sure what you mean by them scouting in Late Jan. and Feb. as my bluebirds stay in the box year around. I will check the box height though and if it’s below 5 feet will move it up. tks
So it’s not too cold here in the dead of winter to remove the nest. I had read something about doing this in Feb. so should I do it now…….Thanks for any and all info.
My woods probably aren’t brushy. The box is about 50 feet from my kitchen picture window so yes it was kind of comical watching them sending the wrens packing the 1st year. When is the best time now to clean out the box? I will try the peanut butter suet. How close can the boxes be to each other in the woods? What are their predators? Thanks for all the help. I know with them around and some bats hovering over my garden at night I have very few mosquitoes around in the summer. I will check the height on my box but if it’s below 5 ft. should I move it up?
I am assuming by using the term hosp. you mean bluebirds. I read and did some research before I set up my 2 bluebird boxes here in rural Pa. I read that they like the boxes lower than other birds. If I remember right that height is 3 feet. I live in the woods and within a week from setting mine out a bluebird family moved in. There was a wren family that tried moving in and they sent them packing. lol My bluebirds have never left and am thrilled like crazy. Larry
