I finally have a pair beginning to build today in my slot box. I have been relentless in kicking the sparrows out EVERY day for the past two months! I almost gave in but this morning after clearing out another sparrow nest last night, I have a pair actively building. They have been in and out all day. A pair of sparrows were harassing them but the Male Bluey chased off the Male HSP. I just popped the female HSP off with my pellet gun so hopefully that puts an end to it. Hoping for a successful nesting!!!
June 6, 2019 at 8:02 pm #7378Richard, glad you finally have a blues beginning to build. Yes, the HOSP are relentless, and I, like you, are relentless to get rid of them. I found out many years ago that it is really good to have at least two boxes, if possible and you have the room for them to be a good distance apart. That way the blues have a chance even if the HOSP try to take over one box. In my mind, let them keep busy at one box, remove their nesting stuff and they usually will keep on going. When I am sure the HOSP pair are committed, I will try to trap them. (VanErt trap is fantastic here since we aren’t too good with pellet guns.)
June 9, 2019 at 2:28 pm #7407Rich, you have to get the male. He’s the one bonded to the box. If you don’t eliminate him, he’s going to find another female. Happy hunting!

Atlanta, GAJune 9, 2019 at 10:47 pm #7417Rick, so happy for you. It is a darn shame people have to fight off the HOSP, and I am glad to hear there is one less to contend with. Good Luck with your Blues, hope to hear some more good news from you soon.
Connie (PA)June 10, 2019 at 8:40 am #7422Congrats!!! Gives me hope there is still time for bluebirds to show up in my boxes! Good luck and GET THAT MALE HOSP!! Critical. I bought a sparrow trap and put a wooden box facade on the front to make it attractive to HOSPS. Get a little bluetooth speaker and play the hosp sounds next to the fake box and they’ll be intrigued.

I nailed the Male Sparrow two days ago! The Blues disappeared for a day but this morning they were back. I checked the box and I have AN EGG!!! I put the Spooker up and about 10 minutes later the Female went in and the Male was sitting on the Spooker!!!!June 10, 2019 at 1:47 pm #7425Really GREAT news, Rich. Congratulations on the entire endeavor – the HOSP demise and the new BB egg. Persistence actually does pay off.

Stafford, VAJune 10, 2019 at 8:57 pm #7428Hi Rich, sorry I called you Rick earlier. I am so glad
you took care of that pair of HOSP and hope you don’t get any more.
Congrats on the first BB egg. My female is still building, she has been at it for about a week but her first clutch just fledged a week ago either Friday or Saturday so I would assume she is busy taking care of her 4 babies.
Connie (PA)June 10, 2019 at 9:05 pm #7431Super news! You must be a really good shot.
