I put a few pine needles in the nestbox on Wednesday when I saw the male bird watching the nest box. I looked in the box yesterday and saw the needles in a circle with a few sprigs of grass. This was taken a few minutes ago. Mama bird has been very busy this afternoon. Maybe an egg tomorrow?

Stafford, VAJune 2, 2019 at 9:35 pm #7353Yes, round 2 for me, also, David. My blues made a nest about 5 days ago, which by the way, was out of dried up, junk grass, not nice like the one above. We have had so much rain, all the good grass was always wet, so I guess they used what they could find. Anyway, I was unsure it was a blues’ nest until I noticed papa Blue on the box several times, and the first blue egg was laid yesterday, June 1, and 2nd one today, June 2. I put up spooker yesterday and the wren guard went up this morning after I found the 2nd egg. Oh, just remembered I need to grease my pole again (take off all the old heavy, axle grease first) because ants are beginning to be a problem everywhere because of all the rain. I have tried in the past to put out some nice dried grass when I thought they could not find good stuff (I even have a neighbor who has pine needles right at the corner of my lot but this new mama does not use pine needles) but they would never use it. Let the fun begin.
P.S. I have been seeing my new fledglings at the worm bowl some now – they are really big!
Good luck on your 2nd go-round, David.June 2, 2019 at 10:16 pm #7354David and Carol….cool you both are so lucky to have round 2 going. They didn’t waste any time starting the process all over again. I hope you get to see the fledglings helping out, that would be fun to watch. Happy birding!

June 3, 2019 at 9:20 pm #7359Thanks Carol and Judy. No eggs yet but the pair have had their first brood on the power line across the street. The young ones seem to be very active and I have not seen them all together. I know there are 3 and possibly a 4th.(I did have 4 fledge) They seem to like my neighbors flower bed that surrounds her mailbox. Mom & Pop sit on the wire and watch as they fly from bush or tree to the flower bed and back. When they get tired of bird-sitting they will probably start the second brood.

Stafford, VAJune 5, 2019 at 6:07 pm #7368David, quit showing off that beautiful, neat nest (ha, ha) My #2 nest was made with old junk grasses and is not pretty, BUT it now has 5 beautiful blue eggs in it! Our second nestings are almost on the same time cycle. It has turned off very hot today, temps near 90 degrees and index near 100 degrees. I am beginning to think about needing my heat shield quite soon.
June 5, 2019 at 6:40 pm #7370Carol and Judy – Thanks. I just can’t help it with the pictures. It’s like every time I go by the box I have to see what is happening until she starts to incubate. – But I will calm down until we have the 5 eggs in the box.
I have my heat shield for the top ready also but it is not as hot as you have Carol. We are expected to be in the 80’s through the weekend. I haven’t seen any wrens around either so I am holding off on the wren shield also.
I have also seen the fledglings with the parents flying through the trees and to the shepherd’s hook No pic of that scene yet

My box where the mama blue would not accept the wren guard, ended up with only 2 eggs. The good news is they both hatched two days ago. I’m still trying to figure out why only 2 eggs, could it have been because of the sparrow spooker?

June 7, 2019 at 11:02 pm #7393Busy day and did not check the box until this evening – and now there are 4.
Judy- these are all taken with my old iphone 5c. I can put the camera against the inside roof of the nest box and still see the screen on the phone to line up the shot.

Stafford, VAJune 8, 2019 at 10:54 am #7394You do a great job with your photos. I take a few shots with my iPhone, but they always seem too dark. Hope #5 egg shows up today. Everyone have a wonderful weekend!
