These people don’t ship, but if you scroll down you can see the squirrel and raccoon baffles side by side. https://springfieldil.wbu.com/content/show/78111 The difference is huge. You don’t need to use both of them. What you need is the raccoon size baffle. It gets mounted very close to the bottom of the box. Raccoon baffles are about 8″ in diameter by 28″ long. Remember that it has to wobble.

Yep. Wobbling is a very big deal.

That’s strange looking. Apparently something has changed and this site is either permanently or temporarily “unfriendly” to IE and Firefox. Can you try Chrome? If you don’t have it it’s an easy harmless install.

Lisa, that’s a great place for HOSP–male or female!

It’s not all bad to just have TRES. I wish we had them down here.

I’m using Edge and have Windows 10. The only problem I had was a couple of days ago when the site wouldn’t load. Otherwise, things are normal.

You can also block the hole. That’s what I do.

Gin, did you ever have a nesting this late up there?

Several years ago I did. It was 2008. She laid the first egg on July 17, the fourth on July 20. By the 24th she was missing and never returned.

Then in 2009 a clutch of five hatched on July 24. They all fledged Aug 9.

Here’s the thing, though. The box they used gets shade after about 2 pm.

I have never seen anybody use a jug for this purpose and I don’t see how it would be effective. What you really need is a wobbling stovepipe baffle, mounted just under the box.

Alone, the pole would have to be really slick. It’s not good to grease an exposed pole because birds can come in contact with the grease. It’s rare but it can happen. And you know what grease does to feathers.

What I would do is take out SOME of the sticks, not all of them. He won’t be able to figure out what’s going on with that.

You can be done with the umbrella until she lays an egg.

What kind of contraption around the bottom are you talking about?

You can look in the box until the 12th day after hatching. After that, it’s best to stay away.

The birds who were raised in your box have to go find their own breeding territories.

You should always clean out a box as soon as possible after fledge.

I’m not surprised she went after you! They can break the skin but I don’t think it’s a health issue. A thick glove should offer adequate protection.

Some people use a gloved hand to extract the HOSP. Others euthanize while the birds are actually in the trap. You could try the bag over the opening if you want. I have no idea if that would work.
