Despite the leaves, it looks like an unfinished EABL nest. There is a neat cup but no finer grass in it. I don’t think it’s HOSP.

I would take out some of the material at the bottom so that it’s not so high. You can do that by lifting the nest up and then sliding out about 1-2″ of what is at the bottom.

The 23rd sounds about right, maybe a day earlier or later.

At least the little dees are too big for the HOWR to deal with. But drat! A HOWR on the loose around the PROW. I can’t stand those little terrorists either. But you already know that!

Dene, only Tammy or I have the ability to delete posts and we haven’t done that in a great while. Yours should be where you put them. Brad found the one he linked above.

Sparky, you can take out the nest but please evaluate where and how your box is mounted. It could have been a snake attack or an avian predator like a house wren.

I think I would remove it now and hope the PROW behave themselves. Those little guys need to fledge soon.

Mel, if you take that piece out of the bottom the nest will be just the right height.

You mentioned the drunk bird business? I should have remembered that.

There is no way to know right now if she is still around and alive. Sometimes we just have to wait and see. The weather could be a factor and maybe not.

Oh HOFI! Are they building somewhere on your house? Things are gonna get messy!

1.25 is perfect for dees. The other one is too small. Only a HOWR could get in there and probably wouldn’t try because it would be hard to carry in sticks.

Dees are fine with spookers. Put it on, please.

If she started a nest she didn’t reject the box. The weather may have delayed the action but who really knows?

How do you know these are all different females? I can’t tell them apart!

Brad, during incubation I rarely look in a box as long as things seem to be going okay. If the female is going in and out and the male is hanging around sometimes, chances are all is well. There is no need to closely manage during this time. When it’s close to hatching time or the expected hatch date, I’ll look to see what is happening.

Whatever you do, please avoid checking at dusk. If you flush her she would have a hard time finding her way back to the box. Songbirds don’t see well in dim light.

Brad, if you have anything shiny to make the strips with that would be good. There’s something about the shiny things fluttering that they don’t like.
