Obviously it’s possible. Sad though. The fight for territory and supremacy can be brutal.

Atlanta, GAScot, without even seeing the trapped birds I bet they were HOSP. HOFI don’t usually enter cavities and are not cavity nesting birds. It does happen but it’s unlikely.

For whatever reason, they have chosen another location for this cycle. Did you clean out the box back in January? That would have been a good idea and wouldn’t deter them. If anything, it would help them decide to nest in your box.

Atlanta, GALisa, the only reason it would be too late to put on a wren guard is that if a wren removed the egg he now knows where the nest is. I doubt it was a wren though. They typically attack all of the eggs.
The female EABL could have buried the egg under the nest. That happens.
And then quite often we never solve the missing egg mystery.

Atlanta, GABetter for the cold to come now than after eggs are laid. I think almost anybody can have snow in March, even down here in the south. We had one of our worst ones in the middle of this month about 20 years ago. We got almost a foot–a blizzard by our standards!
