There are several things you can do to deter hosp from using your feeders but if they are more numerous than all the other birds it’s a losing battle
Trapping is a great solution
I went from almost nothing but hosp almost back to normal in 5 months of trapping with a DRST
Talk to your neighbors, maybe you can find an ally who will help you with disposal
Good Luck
Darrell in KChosp= house sparrow
I am trying to trap the little rats! That’s very odd that they won’t eat meal worms!
Are they visible in the tray?
Sometimes there may be to much of the sawdust and maybe they aren’t visible
Only thing I can think of !?
You might try some peanut butter suet instead
If you make your own you can mix dried worms right in
Good luck
DarrellPlease consider trapping them next time
I have learned from experience that if left unchecked they will eventually take over and drive the other birds away.
Good luck 🍀

P S:lots of good info at sialis.comI would try trapping and eliminating them asap!
They will drive all the other birds away eventually
DarrellI am lucky-no squirrels in my neighborhood yet but it won’t be long!
What kind of bait are you having the best luck with?
I haven’t caught anything in DRST for a few weeks now 😭
DarrellI put clear tape over seed on bait tray so they couldn’t get to it. Only caught two though.
Oh well-the hunt continues
DarrellYes! I think one of them held it open while three others went out! I think maybe I had too many in cage for too long. Gonna try putting clear tape over bait on bait tray-see if I can’t get more birds to commit to the elevator
DarrellThe first pic looks like a burning bush that has lost some leaves but I can’t be sure. I know they love to hang out in mine!
DarrellThey would love to herd some sheep but there aren’t any around. Their main job is being my wife’s shadow! Sorry for your loss. Maybe someday you will be ready for another one.
DarrellPlease do post some pics!!
I would love to see them!
I have no blues this year or last.
Are you plagued by hosp in Virginia?
They have taken over here in Kansas City!
Looking forward to your pics
DarrellThanks for the info! It’s a puzzle that’s for sure. If I put the other feeders up they seem to avoid the trap and if I take the feeders down they tend to go elsewhere. I may have spooked them by putting so many new box traps up lately. They are roosting in my neighbors bushes by the hundreds -trying to find someone with a mist netting permit to help me catch them
Thanks again
DarrellHi Kathy! I am new to the site-wish I would have found it sooner! Looking forward to your input!
Gin what kind of dogs do you have?
I have a blue heeler and a bh/border collie mix
DarrellHi Chris! What bait did you have most success with? I’m glad to hear your native birds are coming back-it gives me hope! Be glad to hear any other tips you might have !
Thanks
DarrellMostly cracked corn, millet and Ritz crackers. I have caught @50 so far-mostly juveniles
