I wish I could get them. But it’s a public park and I can’t be there much other than to check every other day or so. Maybe I’ll get working on making a mansion two-holed box. The swallows are back now too, so I worry about them, but also that the bluebirds will be done with the location now. Frustrating!!!

Can anyone tell from this if it’s the mom or dad? I assumed more blue if it was the male.

My boxes have two holes. The idea is that bluebirds can defend these boxes. They are not sparrow resistant but allows an escape for adult bluebirds to take the fight outside of the box. Linda Violett did a great deal of field research on this idea with great success.

I put up dual-holed boxes which is supposed to help bluebirds defend the box from sparrows. It creates an escape route so the bluebird can take the fight outside the box. I can’t prove it but I had success with them last year.

I wish I could but it’s in a public park in the burbs. Some “do-gooder” would likely let them out of the trap or steal it….or I’d get in trouble. I am a believer in the two-hole box though. It allows escape and taking the fight to the outside of the box.

Darn HOSP harassment today! We will see if my dual holed boxes keep them safe again this year.

I still can’t believe it but there is a nest. I was amazed enough to see a pair hanging around. The nest had a good start the last weekend of February. It’s funny to think this time last year I wasn’t sure I’d ever see a bluebird in my neighborhood.

It’s on! The first nest of the season in my suburban Philadelphia town is built before March!
