Thanks for responding. I still have hope but it’s very odd. Trust me, the box will remain and I’ll be keeping a close eye!
Haha! I know…this may be a mistake! But I feel like I get nothing done during that time anyway ;)
Scot, I am a new bluebird box landlord, so I am no expert, but my bluebirds built a new nest in the same box immediately after a completely failed nesting attempt. The female originally laid 4 eggs and incubated for about 23 days and then abandoned the nest. I removed the nest and eggs once I was confident she had abandoned it, and the very next day they started building again! She laid 5 eggs this time, and 4 of them hatched. So I think you have a good chance of the pair nesting again. Good luck!!!! It’s such an exciting experience – but definitely an emotional roller coaster at times!

Yup! I read not to check after that time. Thanks!
The baffle has been up since we put the box up. Good info about the grease! Thanks!

Yes, Gin. Thanks for checking this. I did remove the egg. And I did apply grease to the pole. I do believe some of the egg white and a little yolk leaked. Hatchlings are doing well, and are 7days old. I’ll be checking the pole daily to re-grease as needed. I want nothing to go wrong now! We’re so close!! Thanks again!

Yikes…!! checked the box today and the egg appears cracked with some yolk spilling out. I’m going to carefully try to remove it without making a mess.
Also, I am totally clueless as to how to post pictures..sorry! I attached the web address for my flickr pic, and it appears nothing is happening. Is there an easier way??

Gin, I appreciate your comment. I am more in the, “let nature takes its course” camp- so I was not planning on candling them- at least not anytime soon. (Clarifying: I would not let nature take its course if there were evidence of predators, etc.) We did have some chilly days, nights, and lots of rain during this incubation period- so I am wondering if this is one reason it is delayed. I am still hopeful, and Mama Blu seems determined. I’ll ride it out with her and see where it takes us!
Thanks for everyone’s input. Such a learning experience and amazing to watch nature in action!!

Thank you so much!! Great info!
No more eggs missing! Thanks for asking. Though they are late hatching. The female sits on the nest religiously, but it’s been 18days since the start of incubation. I’m worried the eggs are not viable. I guess nest building and egg laying are the easy parts! But I’ll let nature take its course.
Hello! I’m Lori in Round Rock Texas (Central Texas-near Austin)…new to the Bluebird Cafe and new to bluebird boxes. My husband bought a box for me, which we installed a few weeks ago – using specific instructions on location, predator baffles, etc. Anyway, I am thrilled to announce we have a pair and so far 2 eggs!! This has been more exciting than I could have imagined. Unfortunately, she as chosen a week that has rain and storm predictions all week long. Is there anything I need to do to protect the box or help in some way? The box is new and seems to be leak-proof for the most part…just want to make sure I do what I can.
Thanks!! -
