Update: Went ahead and intervened as she seemed lethargic, sitting motionless for long periods of time. Gave her a little bit of water drop by drop with a syringe and she perked up quickly, hopping around again. Mom and Pop found her and I think they’ve been feeding her. She’s sitting on stone and I’m worried about her getting hypothermic overnight although it’s not going to be cold. Guess I should leave her alone now, will check on her again in the morning and put live mealworms out as usual. If anyone has advice please chime in. Thanks!

Well, two of the babies fledged on Tuesday. It’s now Friday and another one just fledged. She’s been standing and hopping around in our courtyard for the past hour. She’s so tiny! Mom and Pop can’t get her to fly yet but they’re trying to convince her! I think there’s one still left in the nest because Pop keeps looking in there. I had noticed after hatching that one or two of the birds were a lot bigger than the others, so the smaller ones must have needed more time to develop. I’ll keep you all posted!

Dave, those videos are amazing! Not sure how much work goes into editing and uploading them but thanks for doing it. The ones of mama making the cup and wiggling had us oohing and aahing over here!
Pic of babies taken yesterday, looks like three girls and one boy. They’re growing so fast! Will have to stop looking in on them in the next day or two—-
I had that happen last year. At three days after others hatched, I gently got the egg out and candled it— the egg had never been fertilized. Glad I did that because it eased my guilt about whether something I did caused the egg not to hatch.
Oh that’s true, didn’t think about that possibility. We’ve been lucky— haven’t dealt with any house sparrows that I know of. We have some house finches though. Their singing is so beautiful, gives BB singing a run for its money!
Wrong vid posted, was a duplicate of the first. Trying again—
Here’s another one after two hatched. If you use earbuds or headphones and turn volume way up, you can hear the other two pecking their way out (tune out wind and other background noises; listen for faint tapping sounds). Maybe this will give ppl a BB fix until their birds and nests come around!
Trying to post vid here—
I stick my phone into the box and get pics. We’ve got a unique setup where the box is on a pole stuck into a raised bed, so I just hop up onto the ledge and can open and look in; hard to see entire contents down into the nest but can easily get pics and vids. Wonder if we can post vids here thru Imgur or with another app?
Fyi everyone on Imgur pics: you can post multiple images at once. If you look up at my post w two babies and two eggs, you’ll see a faint white arrow to the right within the pic. If you click on it you can click through them, then click back w arrow on the left. It’s cool to see the daily changes and feather growth!
Thanks!
Thanks David for Imgur instructions, very helpful!
And the babies today—-Another—
Hi all, we now have four babies born three days ago. They’re all doing well. I’m rationing live mealworms and trying to figure out what kind of powdered calcium to get. The local pet store has a reptile version with vitamin D added. Is that ok or should I order plain calcium carbonate powder online?
Here’s a pic if I can get it to post—
