Thank you for the suet suggestion. For some reason I forgot all about that. I took all feeders down while the Blues we’re nesting.
I will try that tomorrow.
Today was so strange. One of the males that I caught this morning in the Van Ert hung around most of the day. He kept going into a different box on my property. It obviously isn’t daddy. He even did go close to the box with the 5 babies but seemed nervous about the spooker.
Mom seems to be keeping up, not as frantic as yesterday. She was catching quite a few bugs and certainly loving the mealies.
Could a new “man” take over so quickly? She seems to barely notice him!Carol, my name is Lisa, thanks so much for your time and advice!
I am baffled. I wake up from a half sleepless night to find momma looking for worms. I am still seeing some Sparrows around so I set my two Van Erts in other boxes on my property. In about an hour I go out to check them. Both were triggered so I get my drst out thinking I’m going to put some “decoys” in my cage. I open the first box to find a male Bluebird! I open the second to find another!!!!!
They both took off, obviously. A little while later I see one up on a line wing waving, but she is not showing any interest. She is frantically going back and forth to box with no help. I’m thinking these are different males? Just wanted opinions.
I’m just going to sit back, ha ha, and watch.
Thanks again!Momma literally looks frantic, which I understand she is!
This is probably a foolish question but is there anything else I can do?
I pray dad comes back, but know that’s a long shot.
You try so hard to do everything right, sorry, I guess I’m just looking for any suggestions or support! ThanksI never updated this but the fifth egg did hatch the following day. They are 4 days old and looking good!!!!
That’s interesting about the taxidermy thing. My father was a taxidermist for years I’ll have to ask him why they would want them.
Most times I would catch a sparrow with the van ert and put him in the cage to attract more. One day I actually caught a male and a female in the van ert, must have followed each other in in quickly!I also love the trap. I caught 19 last week! With 5 new bluebird babies and tree swallows checking out another box it is a must to catch as many possible. I don’t enjoy doing the “deed” but I know I’m doing the right thing.
As soon as I looked at your photo of the nest I thought it looked a lot like my Bluebird nest. Other years my nests were a little more elaborate, and more to them. This years looks like yours, but with 5 blue eggs! Yeah!
Good luck! Are you sure it’s not a Robins egg?
I’m sorry for your loss. I lost 7 day old Tree Swallow babies last year to Sparrows. You can’t give up, just take precautions.
My guess would be that was the female, but I,m not an expert.
Hang in there.Yes I know I will be anxious for the next couple weeks!
Momma did lay egg #4 this morning. I think she’s done.
Thanks Tammy and Gin!My name is Lisa. I am from Phoenixville, Pa. I am a dog groomer and a true Bluebird nut!
A pair of blues came to our property three years ago and nested. I was hooked! We have had 5 successful broods over three years. I do feed live mealworms year round and have had the Bluebirds winter with me each year.
I am happy to say that we have 3 eggs in our box and maybe more to come. It is very cold, lows in the twenties, and we had snow today. I am concerned about this obviously.
I welcome any comments pertaining to this subject.
Good luck to all! -
