I deal with mites on a regular basis. I recommend a little Sevin. 5%. There’s been some concern recently about DE and baby birds according to the PMCA. So they aren’t recommending using it. They don’t officially recommend using Sevin either but unofficially they are. I bet that’s what happened. They could have quickly crawled on your little mechanics mirror and up your arm. I’ve had them on me many many times. Just put on those gloves. Tape the edges down and then put Vaseline on your arm at the base of the glove. That stops them from traveling up. For some reason I always forget and brush back a piece of hair and then they climb on my face. Gross!! Just use a spatula, lift the nest up and put a 1/4 tsp under the nest. And then scrub those gloved hands before you remove them to kill the mites that are on them.

I’ve never experience that or even heard it happening but I know it’s possible. You’re positive it was a female bluebird right? I don’t mean to doubt you….just is not the norm at all. I’ve had HOSP and her wrens doing that but I know you know the difference. How sad!!! So sorry. I would hate to watch that!!

I used to have 3 broods every year but this momma has had only two for the past few years. We’ll see what she does this year.

Over the years on this forum we’ve gone from suggesting a wren guard with just a front to one with sides too because the wrens have found the hole when there are no sides. But I see so many wren guards with only fronts still on FB groups and other places. Is it just a matter of time do you think? I have just a tad experience with wrens.

Hi everyone. Sorry….forgot to check back in. Yes it was fine, I just put him back in and he finished hatching on his own. I think I moved him to another nest with younger babies. I’ve had to do that 3 times this year. The little runts wouldn’t make it on their own in a nest full of older siblings. I’m wondering if there is some egg dumping going on. It’s not super logical to think that this one hatched so much later than it’s siblings.

I’m so sorry. If only they were younger you could possibly foster them in other nests (in your area). I bet the male found another female. I wish we could help.

Hi, Ruth. Personally I find that both males and females draw more HOSP in the trap. I don’t see a difference. And it seems that the more birds I have in there the more HOSP I attract. They all want to join the fun. Now is a great time to trap because there are fledglings.
Like Darrell suggested, You almost have to use a van Ert trap if you have a HOSP that has zeroed in on one of your boxes. The repeating trap is for the general HOSP population. Yep… it’s best if you remove that trap off the nestbox.

I’d be glad to talk about disposing of the HOSP. I’ll personal message you tomorrow.

Do whatever you think is best but if you take it off put it back as soon as you can.

You haven’t brainwashed your wife to join you in your bluebird obsession yet? My husband has joined me. Sometimes he’s worse that I am!

Yikes! I’m not sure what to tell you. Is the wind going to be that strong?? I’m not sure if the parents still go into the box in the evening at that age. Maybe some else remembers that info.

I’d love to have dee eggs! Congrats. Depending on where you live there’s a possibility of a blue nesting. I had one start a nest in August one year and several times had one begin in July.
