Rich, it is not too late for another nest. just clean out the box and put it back. The birds might be back for end of season clutch.

Stafford, VARich, it is good to hear that you got the HOSP but sad to hear of the other babies. Do you still have the single one with the mother bird. Nature can be cruel sometimes.
David
Stafford, VAAnd now there are 2 eggs.

David
Stafford, VAWay to go Sky. Some people just don’t know how much harm they do even when they hear or see it. I like your “bluebird fairy” role. Keep up the good work!
David
Stafford, VAStay with it Rich. I’m with Sky on this.
David
Stafford, VACarol, I have had the same experience here during my pairs first sitting. We had o week of 90+ and I saw them outside the nest on the shepherd hooks or in the shade in the trees for long stretches. I never stayed around long enough to see if they went in or not. I suspect now that they were probably like your birds and stayed away while the temps were in the upper 80’s and 90’s.

Stafford, VASorry to hear Rich. It is possible that the male just staying out of the way. Hopefully he will return. Nature has it’s own way unfortunately for us bird “keepers”.
David
Stafford, VAAs they get older and their neck muscles strengthen they will be able to extend, with open beaks, for food at the slightest disturbance to the nestbox. They will be expecting one of the parents with food.
David
Stafford, VAThanks Dave. I believe that my pair are the same as the last 2 years. Both started feeding at my seed feeder last year and they continue this year. I am not sure that a new female would go for the seeds. This one does look a bit older.
David
Stafford, VAWe have a new batch of eggs coming. Here is the first one in the second nest.

Stafford, VACher, I, too, appreciate all that you and Tammy are doing. I worked in the IT security field years ago and know what you are going through as an Admin. I did not know that you were doing this as a “side” function. You are a special person to take this on. Thank you for keeping this forum safe for all of us.
David
Stafford, VAMaybe this one is a first-time dad and has not been told to help feed the young ones. He will probably start feeding when the female starts prompting him. Like Carol, i have not seen this behavior either. Both birds frequent the feeder and bring mealworms to their young.

Stafford, VALisa, it is good to see that your little ones are feeding and getting bigger. And for you and Carol – even though I grow my own mealworms, I am finding (at least for this batch of new ones) the parent birds are not taking as many worms as they used to. Maybe it has something to do with the heat or they have found a good supply of natural insects and seeds. I have just lowered my feeding to about 35+ twice a day.
David
Stafford, VAReally good to hear this Chris. I agree with Carol that you need to fix that rooftop. Perhaps a piece of plywood or styrofoam attached to the top until you can replace it. The moisture that leaks in can cause mold in the nest which is not good for the young ones.
