Thought that I would try to post a photo after reading the post.

This is my current nest taken at 6 days after hatch.

Cher – what do you use as a “wren-guard”?

Hang on for a day or 2. If the last egg was laid on 4/19 you whould expect all hatchings completed by May 3. I would wait until tomorrow or Saturday before removing them.

I have had chickadees in the BB house but have never seen the BBs build over a nest. I did have chickadees build over a BB nest last year before the BB’s laid their first egg. I always clear the box after the young have fledged.

It is best to just empty the box and dispose of the old nest after the young have fledged. Put the old nest in a trash can. Don’t trash it near the nest box. I usually take the nest box off the pole and clean it with soap & water. Let it dry for a couple of days and then return it to the pole. The birds usually revisit the box after a week or 2 away with their brood.

Thanks Scot. Don’t be discouraged the first year. My first nest was 3 eggs and 2 actually hatched and fledged. The second was 4 eggs and 4 fledges. The birds will be more comfortable the second year – if it is the same pair that returns. I had 3 5’s the second year.

Hi all. My name is David and I live in Stafford, VA, just north of Fredericksburg, VA. I come here from “Dave’s Garden”. I have been into Bluebirds for about 7 years and have had 12 broods (54 birds) fledge. I had a very bad year last year similar to some of those that have posted about nest raiders. I have photos to post but need to set up the online storage for them. Right now I have a nest of 5 birds that will fledge on May 8. I hope to get photos of that fledging.
