Thanks Carol. It is raining this morning and I haven’t seen the young ones yet but the male bird in out on the shepherds hook or on the box waiting.
The heat shield is just a 12 x 12 piece of thin plywood left over from a new floor project. I change the shield as the wood deteriorates. I have used pieces of T-111, and 1/2 inch plywood also. I haven’t used side panels yet but may if we have a warmer summer than we did last year.

Stafford, VACongratulations on the brood. My birds are in the fledging process today. Photos in the BB Photo thread. Good luck with this nesting.

Stafford, VAPatience is a necessity in this venture. The birds seem to not mind giving us fits in what they do or how long it takes them to do it. It is good to see that your pair are taking full advantage of everything that you have provided for them. Relax and watch the progress.
David
Stafford, VAThanks Tamsea. I will try. What thread or are you posting a new question?
David
Stafford, VAScott. I have had only one nestbox for the past several years. The birds will return if they can. i clean the box after each brood has fledged. They build a new nest and raise another family.
David
Stafford, VAThanks Cher. I haven’t seen any wrens or sparrows around the box so far this year but last year a wren got 9 eggs (2 layings). I am going to make one of these guards to have in case my next brood(s) need it. BTW, I think that the “sticky” post was very informative.
David
Stafford, VAThought that I would try to post a photo after reading the post.
This is my current nest taken at 6 days after hatch.

David
Stafford, VACher – what do you use as a “wren-guard”?
David
Stafford, VAHang on for a day or 2. If the last egg was laid on 4/19 you whould expect all hatchings completed by May 3. I would wait until tomorrow or Saturday before removing them.
David
Stafford, VAI have had chickadees in the BB house but have never seen the BBs build over a nest. I did have chickadees build over a BB nest last year before the BB’s laid their first egg. I always clear the box after the young have fledged.
David
Stafford, VAIt is best to just empty the box and dispose of the old nest after the young have fledged. Put the old nest in a trash can. Don’t trash it near the nest box. I usually take the nest box off the pole and clean it with soap & water. Let it dry for a couple of days and then return it to the pole. The birds usually revisit the box after a week or 2 away with their brood.
David
Stafford, VAThanks Scot. Don’t be discouraged the first year. My first nest was 3 eggs and 2 actually hatched and fledged. The second was 4 eggs and 4 fledges. The birds will be more comfortable the second year – if it is the same pair that returns. I had 3 5’s the second year.
