Maybe they are just playing house
Hang in there Scot. These birds do strange things sometimes, as you have seen with your pair.

Stafford, VACongratulations on the nesting. Hope that it goes well. You might get a Sparrow Spooker up if you have not done so already, as a precaution. I also agree with Tammy that you need to cover that wire base. A couple pinches of grass clippings should do the trick and Mama bird will pack it down to a nice bowl.

Stafford, VAThey are growing and have their feathers now. I looked in the box yesterday but did not have my camera. We are at day 13 following the hatch so I do not want to disturb them any more before they fledge on July 2. I will be ready for them this time.(I now have and excuse not to be working but to continue my “healing process” on the deck. I will try to post some photos of the fledging.

Stafford, VAYes, and you might have even directed her to the photos on the Sialis.org site. She really needs to know how bad the HOSP’s are and how to get rid of them She is not doing us any favors by tolerating them!

Stafford, VAHi Sky. Good to meet you. I am interested in you HOSP method. I don’t have a problem yet but have seen the HOSP every once in a while.

Stafford, VACher, sorry to hear the bad news. Life is tough “raising” these little birds since we cannot intervene much to help them. I have had the same experience, to a lesser extent (2 boxes vs. 4) but the effect was the same. I did remove both boxes after the second nest robbery, cleaned them and put them away. I did but the house that is now up back at the onset of winter. My blues use it over the winter as a roosting spot.
Stick with it and watch out for that wren. They can be mean.David

Stafford, VAGood luck and have a nice trip.

Stafford, VACarol, it should be okay to do it now. I believe that I put mine up after they built the nest several years ago. It would be better now than to risk injuring the eggs after she lays them. Watch to see how the accept. My male bird was right on top of the shield after I put it on the box.

Stafford, VANow that is impressive. How many pairs occupy this “apartment”?

The BB may start a nest anytime after the young have fledged. It all depends on how ready they are to start a new brood. Don’t expect this on every nesting. Mine have usually been 4 days – 5 weeks.
Happy Birding

Stafford, VASounds like the HOSP. A House Wren builds a trashy nest also but not with that big of a twig.
