You can start using the spooker now. Just watch for acceptance as usual.
I leave guards on way longer…10-12 days. They aren’t going to fledge before that and are big enough that a HOWR can’t remove them.

I always measure 3 inches from the front of a box when I put on a guard.

Atlanta, GATammy, it all depends on the birds and their determination. We have absolutely no way to predict that. ONE time I put the guard back on before the first egg. It was an experienced pair and the nest was almost completed. They didn’t seem to mind but remember it was ONE time. Good luck sweetie.

I do have dees about to fledge but that’s it and maybe all for this year. I do love it when they are successful because they so seldom are.

Atlanta, GAI have not seen this but it does happen, especially when there is a shortage of males. If that is what is going on, he’s going to be a busy boy.

Atlanta, GACarol, you could stick a spatula in the nesting material a little way up from the bottom. That lifts almost the whole nest. Then you just rake out what is under your spatula. Ta da! You are done. Well as soon as you wash the spatula before the next batch of pancakes.

It’s ok if you take down the box unless you can move it to a spot where it gets less sun or get it better ventilated. It’s a sad thing to cook eggs.

Atlanta, GAHouse Wrens. Ugh. This year I somehow got a white egg laying female. Yesterday a HOWR killed her first two eggs. All the usual precautions were taken. He hasn’t even bothered to start with the sticks.

It is highly unlikely that the same female laid an egg 6 days later. Notice I didn’t say impossible!
