I think yoi gals live in heaven or something close to it. Lol. Catbirds at least eat it so not wasted ar least. If I put any more orange stuff out they may send me to the loony bin.
Soooo jealous on the Orioles! Inhave them fly over my yard and sing multiple times every year but they just refuse to go for the jelly feeders or oranges…of which I have 3 feeders. The catbirds are non stop but not orioles. I have tried everything. I have running water and keep the feeders out in the open. Is it too late now?
Happy Birthday, Tammy!
Peace in the valley for three days….so nice.
Caught another male yesterday morning! 3 down 497ish to go. Haven’t heard that awful irritating HOSP chirp in about 24 hours. So encouraging. Please bluebirds come! I’m ready finally.
Any chance of me getting a late or second nesting this year you think?

Just disposed of another male! Thank you Mr Van Ert! And the local wildlife get another snack tonight…feed some fox or possum babies.
I had been ripping the nests out so much they haven’t been bothering at this point. Awful year…wish I did this much earlier.
Doesn’t help when there are people in the neighborhood breeding them in boxes and multi holed mansions designed for purple martins or God knows what. Just sad, the ignorance.
There are plenty more in line to meet their fate. I also have a trap set up in my shed with a faux birdhouse on the exterior that leads to the trap. So far nothing, but a guy on Youtube used this method and was catching 500 a year! He says he finally has made a dent in the population that he catches much less now.

Gorgeous photo! Jealous.
Yes. I think I got it down now though. Trap is set for the morning. Always scared I’ll trap a bluebird though. This is right around the time I saw them last year in my yard, but I also didn’t have a too bad of a sparrow problem last year.
Thanks for the encouragement, Julie. That trail nesting was my sliver of good bird news this spring. Swallows declined my yard for the first time in 4 years….last year I had bluebirds ALMOST nest in my yard too in late June for the first time ever…but haven’t visited yet this year. Hoping for another late visit maybe. Fingers crossed. I need some good news.

I did not have a spooker. Kicking myself now. But this trail has been sparrow free for the most part for a couple years. The swallows are everywhere and seem to help keep the sparrows away in swarms. In fact as I was approaching the bluebird box from a distance I could see swallows swarming the box…while the sparrow was in there. No excuse though. I should have used fishing line or something.

So yesterday I put the two babies back in the box just in case by some miracle the mom could bring one back…they were not completely dead. Tonight I went back to collect the bodies and to my shock, there was only one bird in there. The one that was in worse shape was still there but the other gone. Is it at all possible the mother worked some magic? Is it possible a baby could have been revived? I am so confused.
June 14, 2020 at 9:45 pm in reply to: First fledglings in my Philly suburb neighborhood in 3 years! #8356So sorry to report that I checked the box today…as aI approached a sparrow was coming out of the box. When I opened the box I was horrified to find one baby killed and two others barely alive. They didn’t look obviously attacked so not sure what happened. They were still warm but couldn’t move. Very slow blink once in a while. I comforted the two for a bit and sadly placed them back. I am defeated. One of the brood made it out I think and the mom was around. Hopefully taking care of the survivor. I cannot hate sparrows enough. I had not even seen one on this trail all year. Sickening.
