No unfortunately they did not hatch. Both male and female are still around and actively visiting the box though, so I won’t remove the eggs. Hopefully they will start again soon.
Yep I used to live only 10 min from here in a less wooded area and like you only saw one or two tiny garter snakes. Now I live on the edge of a nature preserve and everything under the sun wanders through LOL. A few years ago we had a 4ft rat snake sunning itself on our front porch. Although the snake hanging 15ft up in the tree was a first for me. Surprisingly though HOWR are still the only issue I’ve had in my boxes so far. Maybe there’s just plenty of other food for everything else.
Wow! What state do you live in, Meg?
I live in CT
We had a broad winged hawk perched above our yard the other day. I just walked around the corner of the house and a hawk was sitting on our side deck. Startled me so didn’t get a good look but assuming it was the same one. Also this morning I looked out the kitchen window and there was a snake sitting in the tree that the house finches nest in 15 feet off the ground! Glad my chickadees fledged yesterday with these predators hanging around!
I also think it’s just their natural instinct and there’s probably not much you can do. My indoor cats sit by the door all day watching birds and chickmunks. Sometimes they even attack the door when a chipmunk runs across the porch. One cat got out into the yard once and promptly brought me back a “gift”. Fortunately it was only a mole.
I don’t use IE, but the site is also acting strange for me in the past week. Sometimes it logs me out and has been slow to load and now when I click a thread it randomly jumps to the middle of the page when the thread opens.
They’re Black-capped chickadees. There’s also a 5th baby in there somewhere.
I don’t really know what the different box types are called so here’s a picture. The floor is about 4″ wide and a little longer depth maybe 5″.
Here’s a picture of the babies from today. Not exactly sure how old since I was gone when they hatched but they are between 2-5 days.

Meg.
Got back this morning and all the eggs have hatched so have 5 baby chickadees!
Does the wobbling stovepipe keep snakes out?
The cornell nestwatch site has a nice interactive feature to look up birds that will nest in boxes in your area with placement tips. The sialis site also has a good page on chickadees that might be helpful…I’ve been referencing that a lot lately since I have BCCH in one of my boxes now.

Oh and agree with Susan definitely increases the obsession..I refuse to store the camera in its bag and insist on keeping it within 10 feet of the door just in case of a photo “emergency” LOL.
I hope she continues to leave the blues alone! I also have a Cannon but the EOS Rebel T3i with a 55-250 zoom lens and I also love it.
That’s awesome! We have barred owls that live in the woods behind our house…they can make quite the racket sometimes. Have seen adults but never a fledgling. Have you put up a box for them or do they just nest nearby? I’ve read that they will nest in boxes and have been contemplating putting one up with hopes of keeping the chipmunk population in check haha. But I also wasn’t sure if it would scare off all my song birds if they were nesting closer than usual.
Thanks Tammy. I do love that the dees finally have some eggs! They’ve been having trouble all year and it’s kept the blues out since the dees were taking up all the boxes so I was just getting a little frustrated with it.
Not sure why I was thinking early July. I live in CT and just checked the sialis site which does say up to Aug is possible. I think then I might move the original box the dees abandoned and maybe the blues will come back and check it out. Hope so!
