Susan, removing the nests of HOSP doesn’t really help because they will build over and over and over again. You need to get a Van Ert trap. It’s a little under $10 and is invaluable. You leave the HOSP nest in and then put the trap in. It will trip when the HOSP goes in. I then put that bird in my repeating trap as a decoy where I catch more.

Hi, Libby. Glad you got your bluebirds early. Mine don’t migrate. I have them here the entire year.
Tammy
Yay!

Or 12. Mine hatch on day 12 or 13 depending on if I count from the day the last egg is laid or the next day. Officially it’s 12 – 14 days and there are some situations where it’s even been longer. Sometimes they postpone incubating a few days if the weather is too cold.

I have 5 eggs now. But you’re ahead of me, Carol.

Beautiful story, Linda! Welcome.

Probably a long shot but you could always call rehabber to see if anyone has bluebirds nesting that you could use as foster home. I’ve notified the local rehabber that I’m available if anyone needs this.

April 12, 2017 at 3:40 pm in reply to: New nest – no eggs yet – what is typical daily behavior at this stage? #3620It is normal for them to take longer for them to lay the first clutch of the season. They seem to speed up the next one or two.

Martha, you are actually opening the box and looking in, correct? I didn’t want to just assume that.
Tammy
I’m not sure what to call you…is it Vera?
Any way. I have an entirely different take on Tree Swallows this year than I have in previous years. They are relentless this year and driving me crazy!!! I have at least 8 TRES box and this year there’s at least double that in tree swallow pairs and they swarmed my bluebird box so intensely that my bluebirds gave up a complete nest. I’ve tried everything besides putting up more boxes which I refuse to do! I tried paring a already filled box 20 feet away and that was too far away because the extra pairs still tried to take over that box. I tried putting the boxes 5 feet away and that worked but it freaked out my bluebird pair so they wouldn’t come back. I’ve never ever seen them this aggressive.Tammy
Martha, search on facebook. Use the word bird or birding or backyard bird and maybe your state name. We have several in Ohio. I’m on a Ohio Backyard Birds, Birding Ohio, and ohio Bird photography. Oh….I just remembered. I have one for you. It’s called BlueBird-L. Dave was a member here and started that fb group, I think. He’s a nice guy and a good photographer! I’m not a member yet so I’m not sure how active it is.

I agree with Carol. No need to buy an expensive feeder until you know bluebirds are around to eat them. But if you do buy a feeder later the grid style one like the one mentioned above works great. I love the one that I bought on this site. It’s expensive but super well made.
Tammy
Yay. My tree swallows are so aggressive this year and plentiful and are taking over even my bluebirds box. I don’t think the bluebirds can take it anymor. I might lose them on the firsr. Eat.
Tammy
Seriously! They outwitted me for now!! I gave up and they gave up. But I know they’ll be back.
Tammy
Randy, I PM’d you with direction on how to PM someone. Just kidding. There’s a link on the right side that says “My Mailbox”. Click on 0 unread messages.
Gusano. I used to clean my box with a mix of bleach and water but now I just scrape it out. Really, that’s all you need to do.Tammy
