HOSP start scouting for nestboxes early in the winter months here in NW Ohio. I can’t remember when exactly but I’d say the end of January or maybe into Feb. Of course they don’t start building then. A Van Ert in-box trap works great. Why didn’t your homemade traps work to catch the first HOSP?

Hey,p, Susan…it’s not abnormal for the bluebirds to disappear in August and part of September. It happens to mine very year. Keep your eyes peeled and when you see them again consider offering mealworms or suet to them and you might see them during the winter.

A sweet story.

Oops…I meant tree sparrow. But yes, Gin. I agree.

Sky, you made me curious. I’m wondering whether I’ve heard of it before or if it’s new. I’d like to here what method you use. Can you personal message me? Or maybe I’ll start the pm.

3 PROW nestings!!That’s incredible. A little tree swallow is my little buddy and will come up really Close to me when I’m out on the patio drinking my coffee. I love having her visit. My joy was cut short though as my husband witnessed her feeding two or three cowbird babies. I’m torn on whether to keep helping her feed them or not.

Those definetly could have been yours. It’s good to leave your box up because it gives them plenty of time to investigate boxes. They start looking around in the winter months.

You’re right, hey my message did not send. I will be writing and I get to my computer later. I’m on my iPad now. It seems like you’re doing well with trapping!

Mary,I just Pmd you. Look on the right of this page and half way down there should be “your cafe mailbox. Once your in you can write someone by just start typing their name and it will pop up as a suggestion. Click on it and write to them. But now you should see my message right away.

Hi, Mary. Sorry that I didn’t see this earlier. I keep mine in one place for awhile but if I don’t have any activity then I move mine. Right under a feeder is a great plan, but watch carefully and make sure you check and release any native birds yet you catch. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between the sparrows so really know our sparrows.
Another idea is to put it right near a shrub, or a fence post.
Now is a GREAT time to trap because there are so many juvenile house sparrows around. I’ll be glad. Help you with euthanizing them with starter fluid. Personal Message me.
I keep my trap on the ground but Blaine recommends that you raise it off the ground. So try both.Tammy
I agree with Gin. Take your pole with you….it should be easy to pull up.
Tammy
If you haven’t yet, you may want to move your box to a pole soon. They probably won’t start another nest but it isn’t unheard of to have end of July nest.
