I use clear plastic 13 gallon bags because often when I’m on the trail I have traps up in two or three boxes. The mesh Landry bag wouldn’t work because I’d need several and they wouldn’t fit in my little fanny pack. I can’t dispose of the vids on the trail so I have to wait tip til I get home. I’ve never had a house sparrow pierce the bag. But if I only had an occasional HOSP I’d probably choose the laundry bag method, you can see what bird you have easily.

Hi, Deb. Sometimes they spook when you remove some nesting material but usually they don’t. Good luck.

Bummer, Carol. So sorry!

A some point you’ll have to decide to remove them but I’d give them a little more time….just in case.

Maybe for wetness but I’ve read where it helps with blowfly infestation. http://bluebirdnut.com.50-22-24-130.servelink.com/registration/ But most of us here aren’t fond of them and blow flies would just crawl up through the screen anyway.

If you are really wanting to help the mom feed her babies I think you’ll need live mealworms. I’m not sure if dried ones will be nutritional enough for the babies. Why can’t you get mealworms? I understand if it’s the expense part of it. Of course buying in bulk is a better price. Wild Birds Unlimited here has them for a fairly good price. Pet stores are the most expensive. You can offer suet but that doesn’t have the protein. Glad she’s fairing well.

I think you handled it well. Sometimes it feels to others we are bashing them over the head with it. When a person is so proud of their bluebirds and then I come in with how they are doing it so wrong hosting HOSP, it’s hurtful. I like the gentle approach. I like your idea.

congrats! I’m on my second too but mine are about to fledge. A suggestion..help her out and cover that bottom wire base with something. Those babies won’t fair well when they hatch and their legs get caught in that. I don’t appreciate the wire base for that very reason.

Yep, it looks like they are ridding you yard of grubs!

The TRES do hang out of the hole quite a bit! It’s normal. Glad you get to keep the lovebird. How fun!!! Glad your bluebird mom found a mate!
Tammy
