How fun that you are seeing her again.
Tammy
Do you use lard in your suet, Carol? I’ll have to make. New batch when I get home.
Tammy
4-6 inches….really. We are out of town. I had to put my traps away. I find it’s hard to put out with snow. I might wait until January.

There’s nothing legally that you can do to house wrens because they are native birds. Or wait…maybe you meant house sparrows? I’m not sure if it is normal to see house wren activity at this time but I may be wrong because I don’t have many here. We will give you pointers on trying to avoid them but that’s about all you can do, legally.
Tammy
How thoughtful of that bird. LOL Why are you putting clear tape over the bait tray? So they can’t get to the seed easily? I would think that wouldn’t work. I think they won’t see the seed easy enough. But let us know. I haven’t trapped for weeks. Been gone from home so have to keep putting it away. I have 4 weeks here though, so I should put it out.
Tammy
Did they lift up the little flap to escape? I’ve watched them try and try to lift up that flap but have never actually seen them escape. I have had quite a few escape though…it’s heart wrenching!

They may overwinter with you ….that’s always fun. Have some suet and/or mealworms ready for them.
Tammy
I don’t know either.. but They like any shrub….in my opinion. They love the arborvitaes on my property and my weigela and rose bushes.
Tammy
During nesting season they prefer some feathers. Even one sticking out of the hole makes them investigate. In the fall, they’ll go in sometimes but nothing like they will late winter, early spring. I have a hard time catching them in a box in the fall.
Tammy
The numbers you trap will probably go down quite a bit in the winter. At least that’s my experience. August is a perfect time to catch Juvies!
Tammy
Sounds like you are doing well.
Tammy
Darrell, you aren’t going to catch much between now and spring. You’ll catch a few with your DRST or walk in trap but not many. The time to concentrate on your trapping is late winter, early spring and on into summer. Spring and late summer are the best times to catch juvie HOSP. You keep live HOSP in the holding area of your traps, right? It’s really hard to catch that first HOSP with a DRST but once you have a live one in there you’ll find that you catch a ton. The best way (in spring) to catch that first one is to catch him with a Van Ert inbox trap and then put him into the DRST. What bait do you use in your traps?

Did you try your inbox traps early in the season? They work great when they are nesting. Try the Van Ert. Inexpensive and works great. Let them start a nest and then place thentrqp in. But of course watch it constantly so you can release native birds. Please forgive me if you know all this. I hate giving people info that they already know but am never sure. I love the DRST.
Tammy
Hi, Kathy. Welcome back!!! It isn’t very busy over here yet. Maybe it will pick up in the spring. A lot of the previous members have not found their way here.
Tammy
I’m seeing more in my area too. So much fun.
