Do they literally have a nest?!! That’s great! Mine are investigating but not building.
Tammy
Yes, definitely a new box is the way to go. Make sure you put it on a pole. I’ll give you the link that gives you an idea how to do it in case you need it. If you put it further away from your trees it might help with the wren problem too. But putting it closer might be better right now if you don’t want to loose the nesting pair.

Thanks. I got a little taste of what it was like earlier but have no idea of the finished product.
Tammy
Yes, many people have bluebirds in their residential yards. There’s a good chance if there’s an open field (golf course) nearby. Just put up a box and see what happens. But do it quickly!! They are house hunting right this minute. If you wait to long you may not have luck this year.

It’s normal to catch only male HOSP right now with your Van Ert trap. You start catching females when the males lure them in and they are bonded with the house. Do you use a bag over your nestbox to remove the trapped bird? That’s the easiest. You don’t need one trap per box. Usually you just move the trap around. And remember, never leave the trap while you go to the store. Has to be monitored well.

Carolyn, do you do the homemade suet?
Tammy
Carolyn, I also thought that maybe dried mealworms might be better for them in the long run…maybe not so calcium depleting? I have friends near by that are offering them with great success. Maybe I’ll try them again. It would be SO much easier!!

What are you referring to, Carol? Sometimes my brain just doesn’t work.

Tammy
Yay….glad you put up a box. My bluebirds are already box hunting.
Tammy
So funny about them removing the pine shavings!! Just a thought…if yours are eating dried mealworms why change to live ones? I’m afraid they won’t go back to the dried ones and live ones are more work. I wish mine would eat dried….but they know they can get the good stuff if they hold out. :(
