Hi Randy, Carol, Lisa, and everyone else:
My bluebirds have disappeared since mid September despite having mealworms out for them. The weather has been mild here. I’m hoping once it turns colder they’ll show up again. Usually that’s when I will see them. I’m gonna start mixing the mealworms with some Fruit, Nut & Berry birdseed mix https://www.amazon.com/F-M-Browns-Lovers-Blend-5-Pound/dp/B000HHQG0Ehe. The bluebirds loved this blend when I had it out last year for them. I hope everyone is enjoying Autumn. I can’t wait until next Spring/Summer.Regards!
Brad,
I had the dome feeder and was disappointed with it. No matter how far I lowered the top of it the Starlings were able to figure out how to slip their heads underneath it and eat all the mealworms. I plan on getting the caged bluebird feeder when I can afford one. I will need it in the winter as the Starlings hoard the feeder then. Luckily I haven’t seen any of them at the mealworm feeder all summer. They eat everything and leave nothing for the Bluebirds. It really ticks me off.How nice Cari!! I hope one day I get to witness this at my nestbox. So cool!
Thankyou for the replies Lisa, Carol, and Gin! The babies all fledged Friday morning. But then Friday overnight we had horrible downpours and thunderstorms that went on for hours. I’m hoping the babies made it through the storms. I still see Mama and Papa bluebird come to the mealworm feeder and leave with some mealworms in their beaks. But they don’t come as often as they did before. I cleaned out the nest and hosed out the nestbox and let it air-dry all day yesterday. Not sure if they are done nesting for the season. Time will tell. But it’s been a great summer for this pair of bluebirds overall. Hoping everyone else is having some success as well.
Congratulations Randy!
Thanks Randy and Carol! I checked the nest this afternoon and was surprised to see a 5th baby blue! I guess it hatched the day after I checked the nest last time. So I have 5 baby blues again! They are about 5 or 6 days old now. This bluebird pair have been popping out babies like rabbits. I’m so happy! I wonder if they’ll have a 4th brood? Even if they don’t it’s been a really productive summer with this pair!
Hi Susan,
I hope the babies in your nestbox are doing okay. Hope they made it through the heatwave. I think the temps are suppose to cool down here in PA in the next few days, in the 70s and 80s I believe. Lets hope so (fingers crossed).Awesome news!! Good luck!
You did the best you could given the situation.
Hi Pat,
Welcome! It does sound like the male bluebird has found a new female. And this could be why she is removing the nestlings since they are not hers. She is probably “cleaning house” so to speak to make way for her upcoming brood. So sorry. Hopefully others here on the forum will chime in as to what they think.Best wishes, Dana
June 30, 2017 at 9:13 pm in reply to: I have made a horrible mistake, and it injured my mama blue. #5202Wow great news Randy!! I agree with Lisa. Maybe the female was just stunned for awhile. So glad to hear she has made a full recovery!
I’m so happy for you Susan! I love summer but having bluebirds around is like the icing on the cake or cherry on top the ice cream! They make summertime that more special.
Thanks Connie! I checked the nest this afternoon and the 1st egg has been layed!
Thank you all for your replies! I looked in the nestbox today and the bluebird nest is totally ready and completed! It looks as if she ready to lay eggs again soon. I’m just amazed they started building a new nest one day after the babies fledged, not to mention happy! Both the male and female are still feeding the fledglings. Will keep you all posted as to when the 1st egg appears. This will be possibly their 3rd brood they may be working on since they were still feeding fledgelings from the 1st brood while tending to the 2nd brood that just fledged…and it’s still only June!
Thank you Carol and Brad! I will check out both sites. I would love to be able to post some pics.
