Hi Connie,
Thank you so much! I’m hoping to get 3 nestings out of them like last year. We shall see….Hi Tammy,
They fledged on May 10th & 11th. About a week after that the mama started building a 2nd nest and it was completed by the 23d. There’s now a clutch of 5 eggs! If all goes well they are due to hatch around June 9th. Meanwhile papa blue is still feeding the fledglings from the 1st brood. Thanks you all! Yes the weather has been miserable cold and rainy but I’m thankful at least 4 of the babies made it. The bluebirds are already working on their 2nd nesting! So I’m excited!
Connie I hope you get some bluebirds real soon. Keeping my fingers crossed!
Hi Renee,
It sounds like you have one busy yard full of nesting birds, how wonderful! Do you get western and mountain bluebirds where you’re at? Which species is nesting in your nestbox. I’m just curious. I’m in PA. We only get the eastern bluebirds here. I find all 3 species beautiful.Wow beautiful pics, David! Congrats!!
Carol congrats! Great to hear the bluebirds are back!
Hi Randy,
Hope all is well with your “blues”. The Carribbean sounds nice! Keep us posted when you get back.Carol,
Here’s an idea to deal with them pesky birds…
I’m kidding of course but as a bluebird fan myself I feel for ya.
Congrats David! Beautiful photo!
Hi Carol, thanks!
I don’t blame you for being jealous. If I was in your situation I would be too.Hi Gin and Carol,
I stand corrected. Very sorry for posting the Skylight Birdhouse link. I know little about it and I never even thought about the fact it’s not good for the baby bird’s eyes. Again my apologies.Hi Carol and everyone:
I have read that the Gilbertson PVC nestbox and the Slot Nestbox are pretty good at deterring house sparrows. I have a Slot nestbox and have not had any problems with HOSP since I put it up. There’s also the Skylight box shown here: http://www.bluebirdconservation.com/product/sparrow-resistant-bluebird-skylight-box/ Of course there is always exceptions to these when it comes to the pesky HOSP. But these nestboxes may be worth a try. I’m just so sorry to hear about your troubles with the sparrows. Not to mention this Spring has been unusually cold.Hi Phillyblues,
Keeping my fingers crossed that this year a pair of bluebirds make a home in your nestbox. And you’re right the weather has been horrible so far (I’m in Lancaster). That’s definitely going to delay things. Put out some mealworms in the meantime. Hopefully the bluebirds will come around.Hi Sassy,
The nest was completed last Friday on 3/31. But the weather here has been so lousy… cold, rainy, and even some snow. The female luckily has not laid any eggs yet. I’ve been putting out mealworms for the pair in the meantime. Wish Spring would get here sooner!Sorry, I hope this is the correct URL for the Fruit, Nut, & Berry birdseed mix if anyone is interested. Bluebirds love it!
