Good luck with you nest. Temps are a bit cool for this time of the year but the blues seem to know when it it okay to nest.
David
Stafford, VAThanks Carol and Judy. Wouldn’t that be a treat? 6 eggs. I’m not sure they would all fit it this box. I have started to collect some wood from trees that I have cut down to see if I can build a 5 1/2″ square floor Peterson nestbox. I just have to get a “ripping” chain for my saw.
David
Stafford, VAFrom experience this spring I would leave it for another couple of weeks. You may read about my mistake in another thread. I thought they were gone also and then found a circle for a new nest and an egg in my empty nestbox. They are probably waiting out the cold weather and will start when they are ready. Remember they do not follow a rule book.
David
Stafford, VADo you have a neighbor that might be able to help? It might give them a break from their self-confinement.
David
Stafford, VAThanks Carol. I am looking forward to tomorrow to see if she continues with this nesting.
David
Stafford, VARenee, that is quite an impressive yard full of birds and eggs. Congratulations.
David
Stafford, VACongratulations Chris. Way to start the season.
David
Stafford, VAWent back and checked the nestbox after a major wind and rain event. The top edge of the nest is at or above the entry hole. There is a definite layer line where it appears that they have built on another nest. If I remove that lower level it will put the upper nest right where all of the other nests have been. I will give them tomorrow morning and if an egg does’t appear I will lower their nest and see if that makes them comfortable.

Stafford, VAWell, I am very disappointed. It has been 2 weeks since that last picture and still no eggs.
I see a male and female bird going in and out of the nest but no eggs. I looked at the nest again today and wonder if the latest visitors built a nest on top of a previous start. It does appear to be higher in the box than I have seen before. Would it be wise to clear the box and let the latest pair rebuild or would that send them away?David
Stafford, VAYou should try moving the new nestbox out of sight of your other nest. Most recommend at least 300 feet between nests but I had a nest in my front yard flower garden (~150 feet away) but view-blocked by the house. I had 2 EABL families that year.
David
Stafford, VAThanks Connie.
I have not seen the HOSP since the incident. A couple of wrens have been in the yard, some titmice, robins, a few stray starlings and some cardinals. I do have 3 types of woodpeckers in the trees but none nesting.David
Stafford, VAIt looks pretty much complete now. I still think that it is a little chilly for the first eggs but we will see.

David
Stafford, VAUnderstand the anxiety. With the blues finding the feeder, they should return when the NH fledge. Do you have room for another nestbox away from this house?
David
Stafford, VABrought my camera out to the dining room where I can get photos quicker. Here is Papa bird surveying the woods possibly looking for Mama bird.

David
Stafford, VABusy morning. the female was into and out of the box all morning with loads of building material. When I went to get my camera to get a shot of her with a beak full of grass she disappeared. She must be camera shy. I did go out to see what progress had been made. The nest looks almost complete. I think that she is filling in the bottom of the nest.
