There was supposed to be a photo with that last post. Don’t know what happened. It has been raining all day today and I did not get to see if there was a 5th egg. Will try tomorrow.
Here is that 4th egg.

Stafford, VACongratulations on the first egg. The fun begins. Did she lay a second egg after you put up the spooker? If so, I would try the Wren guard if you have a wren problem. I have not seen a sparrow or wren in my back yard for a while so I have not put up a spooker or wren guard. I have them ready in case I see some of that activity.
Question 2. Have you had a shepherds hook there before? If so, did they use it? Mine seem to like the hook in the morning but stay in the trees during the afternoon – except following the hatch. Then they seem to land there with their meal for the nestlings before going to the nestbox. My hook is about 30 feet in front and to the left side of the nest box. I do not have many other birds that share the hook. maybe a cardinal or robin once in a while, but not many others.

Stafford, VAThanks Carol. No, she is not sitting on the eggs yet so we should see 1 or 2 more. It is still cool in the evening so that concerns me a bit. At least we have a brood before Memorial day.

Stafford, VAGood to hear that you have a new brood also. I am kind of disjointed. We had that early nest and still no eggs.

Stafford, VAStill no egg activity and I haven’t seen them putting any more grass in the box so maybe she is finished with the nest. Both have just been sitting on the shepherd’s hook, looking pretty. The male really shines when the sun is out. I took these photos this morning on a cool, overcast day. He still looks nice though.

Stafford, VAConnie, so sorry to hear this news. I would suspect HOWR over the dees. I have only had one season with dees in a box but they did not seem to be interested in the bluebirds in the other box. I hope that your female will continue with the nest.

Stafford, VAThe saga continues – Looked in on the new nest this morning and found the egg missing. Nowhere to be found. I looked all around the base and immediate area to see if a wren or sparrow might have take it but found nothing. Mom & Dad bird have been on he post most of the day. I wonder if the egg was from an earlier female or another pair. Guess that I will just have to watch and wait.

Stafford, VAAnother reason to build a new nestbox. A woodpecker is trying to get in. You can see a hole that I covered last year on the back of the box in one of the photos above. I am going to cover this with a piece of metal. I might even cover the whole side and use a 1/2″ spacer to provide some air flow so it doesn’t get moldy.

Stafford, VAIt is overcast with drizzle right now. I looked out back to see if the blues were doing anything and both were carrying material to the box, so there is some “redecorating” my “renovation” going on. I took these with my iPhone as i had moved my big camera back to the drawer after the previous error.
