I don’t know what coles kibble is. I do know that birds can get stuck to the nest for various reasons but if you saw him in the hole it doesn’t sound like that kind of thing.
EABL do feed chicks small fruits that contain a seed; I have seen the seeds in the nest many times. It could be that he did have some deformity of the foot and was lucky enough to get to the hole but not able to exit.
It’s sad but you actually did have a great success rate.

Atlanta, GAIn my experience, remove or leave the nest. It really doesn’t make much difference. I wouldn’t remove it because, like Brad said, they will do that job if they want to.

Atlanta, GAInstead of totally emptying the box, you can try removing some of the sticks and letting the others remain. I don’t think they ever figure out why the thing never stays full.

Is the box shaded at all? This bunch might need some heat shielding or they will for sure get too hot.
