You got it. Count from the final egg.

      Congrats on the hatching!

Ben, welcome to our world! You don’t have to feed your EABL a single thing. They do a good job hunting for food. Some people feed them just because it’s fun.

Good luck and let us know if we can help.

Brad, I have a box complete with a baffle in my front yard. People and cars go by all the time. Nobody is using it right now though. But then they aren’t using any of my others either. :ShakeHeadSadly:

Probably a long shot but you could always call rehabber to see if anyone has bluebirds nesting that you could use as foster home. I’ve notified the local rehabber that I’m available if anyone needs this.

I think eggs have to be the same age as the foster nest and incubation not started for this to work.

About how far from the ground are the branches? I don’t have a problem with a box under trees as long as they are tall. Snakes aren’t in the habit of dropping 20 feet or more.

CARW are wonderful birds! You will enjoy them if you have them around.

I wish there were no such thing as HOWR. I am so done with them.

I don’t see any problem at all with the coconut fiber unless it has been treated with some kind of toxin.

Please post yard pics if you would. That might help even though it can be hard to judge distances in a picture.

You have a house wren in that box above. You can try leaving it open for a day or so but the bird will be back when you close it. This is probably on the way to being a dummy nest and it’s perfectly fine to remove it.

Gin, what on earth did you do to offend your blues? I believe on another post you said you hadn’t had any for 3 years! Just teasing, and I know you wish the same, even though I’m sure it is less stressful.

I am strangely at peace about all this. AND it gives me more time to think about everybody else’s problems. :woohoo:

Dene, you can leave the nest (bird not wasp) in the box. If somebody else want the box they will just build over it.

This is bizarre. I have never heard of this and I thought I had heard everything. Wow.

                              To answer your questions:

                              1. He is calling a mate and defending territory. Males will find the highest spot in their territory and have at it.

                              2. Pine straw sounds like EABL but the twigs sound like HOWR. Keep an eye on it! You don’t want to host HOWR because they just make more HOWR and that spells trouble for all of the other birds.

                              3. Lots of birds like mealworms and most will feed them to chicks in the nest. A ground hunting bird is less likely to find a dish that is elevated like yours is, but it’s not impossible. It could be anybody who took those worms. The roof of a box is my least favorite place to put worms but you gotta work with what you have!

David, I have several boxes but only one has seen activity this season. In that one, BHNU were ousted by CACH who were ousted by EABL. No eggs at all at this point.
