The house wrens here are determined little buggers even with a 1 1/8″ hole reducer on a box it tries to fill the box up with sticks. Knock on wood so far I have seen nor heard one this year. I haven’t tried a spooker on the dee box but have a hold reducer on and wren guard also.

I bought the red/silver mylar from sparrowtraps.net a few years ago. I, myself, prefer the old rainbow sparkly mylar. I buy any I can find be it gift wrapping ribbon, bird scare, etc. I think it holds up a lot better than the red/silver stuff. I get a couple of years out of the sparkly mylar compare to just one season for the new type offered now.

I would use an unused paint brush to brush all the ants out of the inside and any crawling around the outside after taking the old nest out. Then do your nest change and dont forget to grease the pole afterwards.

You could install a wren guard on the box after the first egg is layed. That would probably help keep those grackles or starling away from the nest box hole.

I put a hole reducer on the box the dees will use otherwise the blues will enter and destroy the dees nest.

I stopped buying live mealworms several years ago. Couldnt afford them anymore. The price for shipping rose too high and the same for the worms. jmo
I now use the dried ones during the winter and the Dees and titmice eat them up. Granted it’s a lack of bugs durning the winter because they won’t touch them during the spring/summer seasons.

Thank you Gin and Tammy I love tree sparrows and was lucky enough to have one nest in the little spruce tree one year.
I forgot to mention in my original post that the third nesting of PROWs did fledge successfully and I was able to see two leave.

Don’t be fooled into thinking just because you don’t see them around you do not have Raccoons. They are every where, even in big cities such as Cleveland, Ohio. I saw them there many times. There’s even Skunks and Opossums in Cleveland, too.

I have never even seen a WBNU even take a peek into the hole of a nest box here. But there are plenty of natural cavities for them to choose from. Good luck with your nesting.

Don’t you just hate those rats birds. Looks like a female to me because of the lighter blue on the back.

I, myself, have found that NO box I have offered will stop a HOSP if it really wants it other than a hole which is too small. But that would defeat the whole purpose of offering boxes to the Blues in the first place. The only thing that has shown to be IMO 98% fool proof is a sparrow spooker after the first egg is laid. One must remove the spooker after fledgling to prevent those little rat birds from losing their fear of the spooker. Also, I have found that a combination of a spooker AND a wren guard provides double protection against HOSPs. I’ve never used a spooker on a DEE nesting so can’t comment on that.

Carol I spotted a male BB about 1 1/2 months ago singing and on one of the houses for a couple of days but never saw him with a female and haven’t seen a BB since or heard one for that matter.
