Hello Lubricator,
The behavior you are seeing is not unusual. Frequently the juveniles from this year’s nesting will come and investigate the boxes where they were fledged from, but they aren’t actively looking for nesting spots. They’re just “playing house” so to speak. Or, they may be investigating, looking for roosting spots for the cold winter months.
When you say you have a perch and a nesting box, you don’t mean the perch is on the front of the box, do you? Bluebird boxes should not have perches. They don’t need them, and a perch makes it too easy for other birds to harass them.

TMB StudiosHave you elevated the trap off the ground a bit, Mary? I always find it works better on a low table or bench, or even an upturned storage bin, as long as it appears to have a “floor” underneath. It isn’t unusual for it to take two weeks or more for the birds to lose their fear of this new “object” in the yard. Try to pick a single spot, and don’t move it around too much. You want them to become used to seeing it so that they’ll stop viewing it as a being suspicious. If you keep moving it, they will continue to be afraid of it. Once you have a single bird trapped in it, you’ll see it will attract more.
I’m not sure how successful the Van Ert traps will be this late in the season, although you might get a HOSP interested in a roosting spot, and then you’ll have your decoy.
Someone will probably answer your dispatch question by private message, as – in the interests of being young-user friendly – we don’t discuss specific dispatch methods in detail on the open forum.

TMB StudiosLake Ontario is certainly beautiful. Friends of ours run the Carriage House Inn B&B in Sodus Point. In fact, I built their website!

TMB StudiosDavid, in your ‘lighthousing’ tour, did you get to Sodus Point? That’s one of our favorites spots on Lake Ontario!

TMB StudiosI’d definitely take the nestbox off the fence and mount it on a slick metal post with a predator baffle. Bluebirds sometimes stay around all winter, but they won’t use the nestbox, except for possibly a roosting box.
The HOSP don’t bother the birds too much once they’re out of the box. The HOSP is no match for a Bluebird out in the open – it’s inside the nestbox where they have the upper hand … er… beak, so to speak.

TMB StudiosI think we’re back in business, although you might find it looks a little different – the messages may be in a different order than they were when you last saw them.

TMB StudiosI use the white mesh laundry bag. Birds can’t use their beaks to pierce it!

TMB StudiosCarol, you have to go to this page in your Photobucket album –

That’s the page where the full-size photo is. Then on the right side – see the “Direct” link. Copy that, then once you’re here, click the img button above the message composition box, and drop that direct link into the box that pops up.

TMB StudiosHow annoying! Seems like it’s a bad year for a lot of us. Carol, I think you’re using the link for the thumbnail, not the full photo. You’ve got to pull up the full size photo and grab the link for that.

TMB StudiosI don’t think a chippie could defeat a stovepipe. They don’t climb all that well.
I wouldn’t have thought so either, Gin, until I saw the little stinker climbing up my shepherd’s hook to access my seed feeder!

TMB StudiosLove the photos, David. Keep ’em coming! And rest well and recover quickly!

TMB StudiosThat seems like a good non-confrontational way to handle it, Rich. Especially if you use the sandwich approach – start with complimenting her on her beautiful property and her desire to help the birds, then just a word on “something you’ve learned that may interest you”, and then finishing up with more commendation. Always wrap such things in a nice package – they are much more easily digested that way! And definitely give her the link to our forum!

TMB StudiosOh, my the TRES drive me absolutely BONKERS when they’re nearing fledging. They hang so far out of the hole they almost topple out and make you think they’re going to just take off, then they duck back inside and led the next one up…and they’ll do that for DAYS!

TMB StudiosWell, at least there’s been no new sticks, and I’ve stopped hearing the HOWR singing out back. No signs of the Blues building yet, either – or any other bird for that matter, except the robin – she flew out of the bush next to the house near where she built her first nest, so I suspect she’s going to build again. On the plus side we have chippies and bunnies to keep us amused. I did wonder about the chippie and the missing eggs…there’s stovepipe baffles on both boxes, but I suppose…
