I haven’t seen the NABS presentation personally, but I was able to dig up some information on it. One of our long-time members (Bet), who we rarely see any more because she’s so busy, had some role in preparing the content. An NYSBS member who saw a rough draft of the text of the presentation estimated that the program would take about half an hour if presented to an audience where questions are asked. The text itself would probably take about 15 minutes to read through without stopping for questions. An outline of the contents is as follows:

      Sections of program on:
      a. Why bluebirds and history
      b. Bluebird biology
      c. Helping bluebirds
      d. Predators and competitors
      e. Conclusion

She also said there’s not much in the program on Mountain and Western bluebirds – just their range and their need for slightly different nest boxes. The focus is on EABL.

She didn’t see any of the photos that go along with the text, but knowing Bet, if she had anything to do with the selection they are probably quite good – she has a great collection from all over. All in all, probably worth the investment…but that’s second- and third-hand opinion.

      Hope that helps!

Carol, thanks for the encouragement. It has been a challenge to get this forum up and running, but I think it will be an improvement for everyone. I currently have the forums set to display 25 topics per page, so once there are 26 topics, it will bump to page 2. The reason you’re seeing one of the “sticky” topics at the top of page 2 is that, oddly enough, this software shows the stickies at the top of the first page of topics, and then again in chronological order. It’s a weird “feature”, and for the present it seems to be one we’ll have to live with. Maybe the developers will come out with a way to have those topics only show once down the road. :BonkOwnHead:

Actually, it’s really no harder to post images here than it was on the previous version of this forum. Nearly everyone who posted images and/or videos on the Yuku site used a photo storage service like Photobucket, Flickr, Smugmug, etc. even though it was possible to upload photos directly to Yuku. It isn’t at all difficult to post an image here. All you have to do is click the “img” button above the message composition window, drop in the url of your image from your image storage site, and click OK. For Youtube or similar videos, just copy and paste the “embed” link into the message composition area.

The problem with your video link on the arlo service, Marcel, is the destination link that expires. It’s not expiring here, it’s expiring on your storage site. There are plenty of free photo and video storage services whose links don’t expire. That’s why your YouTube video is still showing, so it’s a good choice, and it’s free!

The difference between this forum and the Yuku forum is that you won’t have to pay for a Yuku subscription in order to avoid the intrusive and sometimes offensive pop-up ads that occasionally would show up there, because Bluebirdnut.com is paying to host this forum, not the subscribers. That was something our moderators were always having to field complaints about, especially during the busy nesting season.

The NYSBS.org Photo of the Month is an entirely different thing. (I am the webmaster there, so I know.) They are paying for their hosting, too, but having a small number of photos uploaded each month via the submission form will not tax their disk space limitations. Allowing users here to upload photos to the forum directly could max out our disk space limitations eventually, and then a choice would have to be made between deleting old posts with photos, or passing the additional cost on to the forum users. If the general membership really wants to be able to upload photos here, we can look into allowing a limited number of image uploads, but doing so could have drawbacks. Perhaps I will take a quick poll of the membership once the season gets underway.

If you have trouble figuring out how to do something on this forum, just let us know. If there’s a feature you’d like and you don’t see it, let me know and I’ll try to look into whether it’s possible or not. I’ve already tweaked out and added a lot of features here. It won’t operate exactly like the Yuku site, but you won’t be asked to pay anything to use it, either.

As for nestbox placement, follow the rough guidelines in the information page here at Bluebirdnut.com. If you need additional, more specific info, feel free to start a thread and ask away!

PS I took your advice and put a few pics on that other site for pic of the month.

                      Excellent, Marcel!

Hello, “Duck” and welcome to the forum.

I don’t think many of us here have experience with the two-holed mansion houses. There are pros and cons to using a two-holed box, or of hanging a box in a tree, for that matter. What are the reasons that are pointing you in that direction? That might help us to refine our recommendations.

Most of us use a standard NABS-approved box design with a single 1 1/2″ round hole, or the Peterson box. Some use a Gilbertson box, but those are getting really difficult to find.

Are you looking to make your own box, or purchase one ready-made?

I’ve been trying to find someone to make these for me to carry in the store without success.

Sorry nobody saw this until the crisis was past, Carol. Poor little thing. Sometimes they just get the wind knocked out of them. Hopefully she made it to the trees ok.

In order to post images in the forum, you will have to have an online photo storage account somewhere, such as Photobucket or pBase. When you want to post a photo, click the ‘img’ button in the top grey bar, then enter the url of the image in the box that pops up. You can enter alt text for the image in the next screen if you want to, but it’s not required.

I honestly think anyone would have to be blind not to find where we’ve moved to. Better to move before the season got really underway than change horses mid-stream. The old forum has the new link plastered all over it in big red bold text – and that will only affect those who had the yuku link bookmarked (bluebirdnutcafe.yuku.com) instead of bluebirdnutcafe.com, because the actual domain name comes right here now. :welcomeback:

                                  Striking a pose

We could really use some more entries over at the NYSBS site, so please head over to the NYSBS site and submit a photo for consideration. You don’t have to be from NY State, and it doesn’t have to be a new photo – at least for the present, while they’re getting the contest off the ground.
