That, I do not know. Mine showed up as soon as I reactivated the plugin. You can try – go to your profile and try to upload an avatar (not a profile pic, look for the avatar field below that). I make no promises. I know there was a glitch with the profile pages where it was causing a fatal error on the site. But try it and see what happens.

David, I had to de-activate the avatar plugin last year because it was doing strange things. It’s since been updated, so I just tried re-enabling it. Let me know if there are any weird things that happen as a result.

Perry, I don’t see any unapproved posts from you, so I don’t know why your posts would disappear. I can certainly see this one OK, and the topic you started as well.

Sure thing! When you’re logged in, the link to your PM mailbox is in the sidebar. I just moved it up to the top of the sidebar so it would be easier to see. I don’t know what device you’re using to access the forum, but on the computer it looks like this:
            Mailbox
Click the link that says “# messages” (#being the number of new messages you have). It will take you to the PM system.

I’ve had some reports that the PM system is difficult to find and use, and messages don’t always get through. I’m not sure why that is. If it happens to you, let me know.

Hello all, just a reminder that this forum is open for all to read…including children. While we understand the need for HOSP control, discussion of the methods of dispatch is discouraged. For one thing, not every method is legal in every location. For another, I would hate to see a visiting youngster disturbed (or, worse yet, fascinated) by a discussion of the how-to’s. I’d much prefer to see those details taken to private discussions. I know the PM system on this forum isn’t easy to use, but there must be some way to make private conversations of those details. Thanks for understanding.

Definitely not your fault, Dana! This was a flurry of SPAM posts with nothing but oriental characters in them – pages, and pages of them. I do my best to keep things locked down tight without restricting access too much, but it seems that for every solution I employ, there’s a workaround. I just don’t get it. What is the POINT?! It’s just pure mischief!

It would appear that the plug-in for bbpress that we’re using for front-end Avatar management is no longer supported. So if you don’t want to lose your custom avatar, don’t try to delete or change it. Only a matter of time, I’m sure, before someone comes out with a new one. Sometimes when we update the core software, old plug-ins stop working.

Evidently there are no DMARC issues – the email notifications actually come from noreply@bluebirdnut.com, and that’s what the “From” field in the email header says. However, it could be getting caught in SPAM filters.

Tammy, try checking your spam folder? Sometimes I get notifications, sometimes not. I’ll have to check the settings to see what email address is in the “from” field – with all the changes in email providers like Gmail, it could be a DMARC issue.

The perch not being on the box is a good thing. Just be sure the other birds that use the perch are not harassing the bluebirds, or you might not get them to stay next spring.

                                Hello Lubricator,

The behavior you are seeing is not unusual. Frequently the juveniles from this year’s nesting will come and investigate the boxes where they were fledged from, but they aren’t actively looking for nesting spots. They’re just “playing house” so to speak. Or, they may be investigating, looking for roosting spots for the cold winter months.

When you say you have a perch and a nesting box, you don’t mean the perch is on the front of the box, do you? Bluebird boxes should not have perches. They don’t need them, and a perch makes it too easy for other birds to harass them.

Have you elevated the trap off the ground a bit, Mary? I always find it works better on a low table or bench, or even an upturned storage bin, as long as it appears to have a “floor” underneath. It isn’t unusual for it to take two weeks or more for the birds to lose their fear of this new “object” in the yard. Try to pick a single spot, and don’t move it around too much. You want them to become used to seeing it so that they’ll stop viewing it as a being suspicious. If you keep moving it, they will continue to be afraid of it. Once you have a single bird trapped in it, you’ll see it will attract more.

I’m not sure how successful the Van Ert traps will be this late in the season, although you might get a HOSP interested in a roosting spot, and then you’ll have your decoy.

Someone will probably answer your dispatch question by private message, as – in the interests of being young-user friendly – we don’t discuss specific dispatch methods in detail on the open forum.
