Too cute Rich!!!!
I had my 3 out of 5 eggs fledge today. It was day 19 so I parked myself outside in a chair like I always do and missed the whole thing. There was no peeking at all. This morning they took the mealworms to the box. I had to leave for like 30 minutes to go to the store and guess what? All worms going next door and empty box. I swear I am never destined to see mine fledge!!!
We had terrible weather and tornadoes over Easter weekend and I was terrified but the house is standing strong and all of the eggs unharmed. I have started with the mealworms because it is 50 degrees in the morning here and I worry about the lack of bugs. What can I say? I love my blues!
Blues are back with 5 eggs.Yay! I still feel a bit guilty about the nuthatches but I hear them everywhere so I know they are well.
Connie, I just don’t get it! The hugest bluebird nest I have ever seen and still no egg this morning. I feel even worse for losing the nuthatches because I fear there will be no birds this year. I have literally never seen the pine straw up to the roof like this pair has done. I check every morning for an egg and nothing….
Carol, I could have sworn it looked just like a hosp nest and egg but after studying sails the nuthatch egg is smaller than a dime with pinkish spots.
As a weird FYI the blues nest is almost to the ceiling of the box and no eggs yet. I’ve never seen a bluebird nest so elaborate.I am so sad to read this. I thought the dees were shy little birds. Hoping for better news.
I am interested to see how this turns out!
Well, the nuthatches had enough of the bluebirds and moved out. The blue nest is complete looking. I have a nice Duncroft house that I never used because I am not fond of the front opening that I received the pole for today and will put up as a peace offering to the poor nuthatches.
PS the nuthatches new nest looks about complete. So they are like the blues and keep trying in the face of adversity. Or crazy human bluebird fanatics.
David, the blues were so nosy going in to the nuthatches house all day today! It was so funny! The blues stand on the roof when they are chased out.
I have a new appreciation for the nuthatches. They are scrappy little things but not at all violent appearing. Plus, the blues found their mealworm feeder today and were happy to find it full.
The reason I feel awful is that I mistook the first nuthatch nest with eggs as a HOSP nest. I took it out. #lawbreakingsongbirdkillerI am a a total idiot. So last night I opened the box to see if the blues were building and startled a pair of brown headed nuthatches. Not HOSP at all. I feel terrible.
OK, will let you know if it works out. At least I have my spooker all renovated and ready to deploy…
Spooker. Darn auto-correct.
Carol, they CAME BACK! Busily building a nest today. I am SO tempted to put up my sparrow spooked before the first egg.
