If you have raccoons or cats that could be real trouble. For snakes I’ve realized it doesn’t matter. I can’t believe what a wimpy half done nest mine laid an egg in today. It’s like 1/3 done!
It definitely looks like one nest on top of another. I hope I’m not nosy but what are your predator guards like?
What a soft cozy nest! Mine are always just old sticky pine straw! Congrats!
I am so sad I missed you!
OK, so one egg today. I got too nervous to put up wren guard and sparrow spooker at once so went with the sparrow spooker tonight and will put the wren guard up tomorrow if I have 2. I hope this is a logical approach. Just hated to do both at once!So glad for a happy ending!!!!
It was such a strange series of events…
Laid 5, then one egg missing…
Saw and photographed 3 hatchlings, one halfway out of his shell. He and shell were gone the next day. Then one hatchling dead the next day with no sign of trauma
Then my very last guy lived 5 days and was fed all day by very attentive parents. The next day he was in the nest dead with no sign of trauma.
The whole thing is so baffling.
I searched far and wide and no eggs or chicks anywhere on the ground. But of course here in Alabama there are tons of critters who would scoop them up.
They are happily building and I am just waiting for an egg to put my guards up. I was off for days and saw nothing out of the ordinary. Never seen a HOSP here. Maybe a wren but I wasn’t sure. It was in the mealworm feeder and a small brown bird.
Have tons of Thrashers but they co-exist peacefully.\\\\That definitely looks like a pip mark. Not a predator mark! breathe easy ;)
Darling babies! I miss mine terribly. They are building again though. Yay! Agreed, that is a super tall BB nest! it seems awfully close to predators!
The only time this happened to me there was a snake attack going on and I was too dumb to open the box and investigate. It was late evening and I just assumed it was because they were close to fledging. Like within days. Thank God you checked! I felt guilty forever!
They are busy building today. Glad I took out the other so I know they are intent on trying again. If it was HOWR I’m surprised no sticks were added.
Nest removed. Dad still acts like it’s his nest bombing me LOL.
Hi Donna! Your bluebirds are so much fluffier than ours in the south! Too cute! Ours are downright skinny compared to yours!
I meant would not explain the last two!
One thing that never occurred to me was Bluejays! I have tons of them and never had issues with them but apparently they will eat an egg or nesting. This would explain the last 2 dead in the nest but might explain the missing egg?
One strange thing is that they usually won’t go back to a nest that has been predates. This pair is definitely not leaving the box. Any thoughts on this,,,
