Plus, dogs. My Yorkie will never put up with a cat in my back yard. Even though he is rarely out they seem to steer clear of that little tyrant!
I host feral cats in my front yard, we have a neighborhood lady who neuters them, and they never bother my birds. The key is that they are neutered and fed daily. Heck, they won’t even help with moles in my yard.
A trapping, neuter, and release program really works for them to lose interest in the birds. Believe it or not. And you have way less cats…bonus! Our birds are way tougher than we are though, luckily!
Please understand that I know how much it hurts, though!!!
I’m not sure what the jug would protect against either. I’m definitely not trying to be critical at all! we are at similar latitudes and should have the same predators. It would definitely not help with snakes, possums, or raccoons…
I’m tempted to move the box to shade if and when an egg is laid.
`thanks Randy! That was perfect!
That’s exactly how I got started. I bought a cute little tin roof house as a decoration to hang in a tree by my front porch. Never dreaming of becoming a bluebird freak. I have learned so much through heartache!
I am definitely not getting my hopes up for this nesting. Average daily temps will be in the 90’s with at least 90% humidity…
That article was a great read! Thanks Maybelle!
Thanks Maybelle…Yes, the clutches here get smaller each time. The first is usually 5 and the second four. So this will be the fourth clutch. This year was 5 (all lost) then 5 (all fledged) then 4 (3 fledged).
Sounds good Whitney! Fingers crossed!
When my first nest this year was lost to house wrens I had one little guy left that I named Jesus. As in “haysus” who was supposed to fledge on Easter. He was so doted on and I dreamed of how big and strong he was going to grow up to be with all of the attention and mealworms. I really fell in love with that scrappy little guy!
One day I opened up the box and that tiny little guy was dead. I cried and cried all day after burying him. It’s all just so unfair.
Since then 8 have fledged. I really don’t know how many have survived. It’s probably better that I don’t.I am just so so sorry…..
I don’t know if you saw my post about them building a new nest 5 days after fledge. I dread the heat that awaits them. But I guess if even one survives it’s worth it in the end. I am so sorry. Believe me, I totally understand…
