David, enjoyed your photos. Spring is finally here‼️ The excitement of the first nesting of the season……is always special. Good luck.
Happy May Day,
Judy-MichiganThanks David and Carol for your help. The bluebirds accepted the spooker and laid egg #2. I put the wren guard up today about noonish. This pair of blues do not hangout by their box, but I did see papa blue poke his head in the hole and leave. Mama was hanging out on the high wire……never saw her close to the box. Guess I will have to wait and see if she lays egg #3 tomorrow. I know those nasty wrens are on their way, but have not seen or heard any yet……grrrr.
I’m hoping the tree swallows nesting in the paired box will help keep unwanted intruders away. They are always on the shepherds hook watching their box. The blues are elusive. I think I will add another shepherds hook to see if they will hangout on it like the tres are doing. In past seasons the blues preferred the shepherds hook.
This bluebirding is so much more involved than I ever knew, but it’s a labor of love 💗

Exciting news Carol‼️ I was worried about the eggs freezing with all those low temperatures, but mama blue knows what she is doing. Four hatching out of five is still great. Congratulations!
Who knows…. your blue with the wing problem might surprise you with a visit in a few weeks. Better yet, maybe it healed it’s self.

Wow…..I didn’t realize mites could be a problem. I will be on the lookout for this too. I really do like all the heads-up information found on here. Thank you all for sharing your knowledge.

So…..the egg is missing, that is strange‼️ They keep us wondering what is going on, but I’m sure they wondered where did our nest go? Then the nest reappears….the plot thickens. David, enjoying the story and all the beautiful pictures. Keep us posted on chapter #2.
I thought the weather was getting better, but today we had more snow and still below freezing temperatures at night. I have a pair of bluebirds that built nests in both front paired boxes. They keep watch over the boxes….no eggs yet. The back boxes have a pair of tree swallows guarding both boxes daily. They have a nest started in one box, no eggs.
Where is SPRING❓
Judy-MichiganDavid….I think mama blue will be very happy with your nest. I bet you were shocked when you saw that egg laying there. Good thing you had the nest to return to the box! All is well……maybe this is the year you get a nest with 6 eggs😳.
Judy-Michigan
Carol….sorry to hear about your bluebird with the possible wing injury. Your post made me chuckle, because catching a bird (at any age 😄) would be a difficult feat. Hopefully it will heal on its own. Good luck.
I know you had super cold weather last week, this week should be better. Between your help with the nesting box and mama blue….I hope all is well.
Judy-Michigan
Wowza Renee……your birding season is off to a great start, congratulations‼️ I’ve heard the Carolina wrens are nice little bird to have nesting close by. You will have lots of action in your yard to watch while we are under the “stay at home” restrictions. Happy birding.
Judy-Michigan
Connie, glad mama blue has a new nest going. Hope this one works out. The weather is starting to change for the better too. I’m so glad we don’t have to worry about bears here….yikes, they are so big scary! Good luck.
Judy-Michigan
That’s good news Connie……a fast turnaround for sure. I’m surprised that they are nest building with the cold snap we are having. All my birds have been hiding out today, super windy and cold, low of 29 last night and light snow.
Carol, I hope all your eggs make it. Do they stay in the box with the eggs on these cold nights, even though incubation has not started? Or do they assume the box will prevent them from freezing? Maybe the box is just enough protection to keep the temp above freezing. I hope so‼️ Covering the vent was a good idea, probably helped a lot, especially with the high winds.
Happy Easter weekend to all,
Judy-MichiganYay…..two eggs, that’s great news Carol. I hope she lays 6 eggs for you. That would be really neat‼️ Sounds like you have everything under control and really for a lot of blue joy. As far as the weather goes cold evenings will be ok as long as they are not below freezing….right? With this early start maybe you will get 3 broods.
That is so cute how you have to sneak the meal worms out to the blues. They are lucky to have you looking out for them. Happy birding.

So sorry to hear that Connie. It almost sounds like that nasty chickadee was raised by house sparrows‼️ I hope your bluebird pair come back and try again. It’s still very early in the bluebird season. I have my fingers crossed for you. Good luck. I’ll be waiting to hear some good news from you. 😊
Judy-Michigan
Congratulations Carol‼️ So exciting, hope you get the second egg today. We are having an early spring here also. Yesterday one of the blues started nest building in the front paired box. I think she might be new at this……the nest looks messy so far, must plan on shaping it after getting the materialS in. TRES have claimed a backyard paired box, but have not started a nest yet. Enjoying all the bird action, since we are suppose to stay home except for essential things.
Stay well everyone,
Judy-MichiganHi Connie, I would leave the nest alone since they seem to be using the box. Carol always gives great advice, she has been doing this many years. Thanks Carol for helping us newbies. Good luck…..keep updating us on progress.
Judy-Michigan
Hi Connie, just curious on what is going on with your bluebird boxes today. Did mama blue lay another egg? That sure is weird….chickadees behaving badly! Now I will have to add them to my watch-out for list. Hope all works out for you.
