Connie…….I have no experience with chickadees, but I think moving the nest to the lone egg was a great idea. I hope it works‼️ So far, so good. I didn’t think chickadees were aggressive birds, I wondering if a HOSP did the damage, then the chickadee came second. Good luck.
Still waiting for nest building here. Seeing bluebirds and tree swallows shopping my boxes. I have two sets of paired boxes, front and backyard.
Happy birding,
Judy-MichiganI heard them singing this morning, what a welcome sound. I hurried to put their boxes out so they knew they would be there when nesting time starts. We still have some freezing temperatures coming up, so I sure hope they wait until April. I think it was the nesting group from the front box last season returning. There were 4 or 5 of them hanging out. They stayed close and watched me put up the paired boxes. Spring and nesting season is about to begin‼️
Happy Spring and Happy Birding,
Judy-MichiganYesterday a group of 4 bluebirds showed up, checking out the backyard box. Nine days after the last sighting. They were in competition with a pair of red-bellied woodpeckers all looking at the bluebird box. I’m pretty sure the large woodpecker wouldn’t fit through the hole, but it was hanging on the front of the box. Papa blue used the birdbath. I have suet and dried mealworms out, but I have never seen them get any. Happy to see them again. In the past years I have not seen fall visits.
This is the never ending season…..My hummingbirds took off the end of September. Five days ago a lone female showed up thirsty. I’ve seen her each day including this morning. Makes my heart happy to help her replenish her fuel to finish her long journey south. She is breaking a record…….my latest recorded past sighting was Oct 14.
Happy Birding,
Judy-MichiganThanks Dana for adding your fledglings. We now have 8 caregiver reports on their fledglings, giving us a new total of 92 fledglings‼️ This makes the average 11.5 per bluebird caregiver. Not bad, we are making a difference.
My bluebirds have been gone since the first week in August. The Baltimore Orioles left the middle of September. Still have female hummingbirds coming to the nectar feeders. Morning are sure quiet with most of the song birds gone.

Not sure what State this took place in, but there was a YouTube video showing a snake bypassing a stovepipe baffle. Snake was black and super long, 5 to 6 feet. With the tail on the ground it could reach over the top of the baffle. We do not have that kind of snake here in Michigan. Bluebirders that have long snakes are using additional stiff netting ruffled up along with the baffle. The snakes can’t figure out how to get around the netting without getting tangled up in it.
So glad we don’t have them here…..good luck.

AGP in Iowa…..20 fledgling is great‼️ That takes the tally up to 80 from 7 bluebird caregivers. Happy to hear they are still hanging out in your yard. I have not seen any of mine for about a month. Still see the hummingbirds and Baltimore Orioles, daily. The season is definitely whining down. I’m looking forward to Spring and hearing the first bluebird call …followed by Mr. blue sitting on top of a box waving his wing. Happy birding.

New tally with Connie’s entry, 60 fledglings from 6 bluebird caregivers. That give us an average of 10 per person. Well done‼️
Judy-Michigan
Connie, that’s terrific‼️ I would love that kind of surprise. Enjoy.

Carol, I believe it’s a bengal tiger cub. It was taken in Mexico, the money was to go to protect the animals. I have since found out it was most likely a scam to make money for themselves. As an animal lover that makes me sad. The cub was super cute, but was surprised by it’s fur being very wiry.

Five bluebird caregivers have reported their success so far, totaling 52 fledglings. I think that is wonderful……we can make a difference.

Maybe they will show up again……you know they like to surprise us and keep us guessing. I also enjoyed this season, looking forward to doing it all again.

Sounds like the mealworms will get delivered just in time‼️ That’s a real good deal to get fast delivery for no extra charge. Overnight delivery is super expensive. I hope your blues appreciate all you do for them……you’re an excellent caregiver. Our reward is getting to see them in our yards. Enjoy your blues, having them year round is such a bonus. Happy birding.

Carol, how is your mealworm situation coming along? Will they eat dried mealworms if you soak them in water? I’ve tried dry mealworms, but I have never seen them eat them. I’m not seeing any bluebirds hanging out….maybe gone for the winter.

Yay‼️ I was starting to worry…..I haven’t experienced any late stayers. Glad all is well.

I belong to the Michigan Bluebird Society – they collect data from members and report the totals in a newsletter in November/December. Always fun to see how many have fledged from bluebird boxes. They may share the information with Cornell University, but I do not know. When I get the newsletter I will report their findings.
David, hope your last baby has fledged by now. Maybe he liked having the nest to himself.
So far between the 4 of us that reported we have fledged 42 bluebirds…….not bad‼️
