That’s funny, Julie, and I think you’re right. They definitely each have their own personalities. I think this Robin is building another nest in a tree nearby, hopefully they choose that one.
But somewhat on the subject, there are birds nesting in a huge tree about 50 yards behind the Bluebird’s box. In a huge natural cavity prob about 6” wide or more. They are super aggressive if anything goes near the hole. Not sure what kind of bird. Brown top with a lighter, cream colored underneath. Fairly big too. About the size of Robin, maybe little smaller.
You misunderstood. Not in the box, in the tree about 20-30 ft. from their box.
Good thing is blue’s eggs should hatch any day now and the robin just starting building. I think it takes them a little time to finish so by the time their done, laid their eggs and they hatch, the blue birds would have fledged.
Thanks!
Three here so far! Their first brood was 5. We’ll see this time, I’m guessing 4.
How many did you end up getting?
That’s awesome, hope to see them some like that before they migrate. The flower farm next door to me has a bunch of houses, I see a small flock flying over there all the time. We get barn swallows too. They are both are so acrobatic and fun to watch. I been thinking about going around my area and talking people into putting boxes up. Neighbors on both sides have some and a couple down the street. This is a great area for birds.
So sorry this is happening to you man. Nature can be so heartbreaking. Hope everything works out.
Nice! Do you have an idea if they are younger or older birds?
Waiting on mine to do their second. I’m thinking they are younger because it took them forever to pick a house and eventually build a nest. The male has been in and out of it pretty frequently but the female hasn’t until today she went in. So I’m guessing it’s soon. 3 of 5 survived the last brood and I’m thinking that’s only because the day they fledged, that night it poured all night. Not windy or cold really, but big down pours. If they’d waited one more day woulda been perfect. That’s their life tho, not easy.
If they are still young you might not have seen the fecal sacs because they eat them. Always seems like there is a lot less activity early on. Probably because they are so small and don’t need as much food to survive, especially in warmer conditions.
They are cool birds! Smart. Yeah kind of like Blue Jays I would say, corvid. I think they are bird safe for the most part. I think they eat insects and stuff also, maybe slightly bigger stuff like small frogs. But I’m sure they would eat a hatchling or eggs if given a chance, just not sure it’s their first choice.
Is the styrofoam on the side of the house? I have a styrofoam roof on one of my houses. Last year I had a ton it from a refrigerator package and part of it had this thick piece with 2 perfect 1.5” holes. So I made a house made completely of styrofoam. I put it up in the winter but nothing went in it and decided to get rid of it, it was more wide with a low ceiling. I would like to try it again sometime Styrofoam seems like such a good material.
Nice job. I was wondering about what they do with bad eggs or dead babies. I read they put them out if they can? BB’s in my yard just fledged Wednesday. I only saw last one and I didn’t see anything in my nest either so I’m assuming they all made it out. I saw five eggs for sure but when I checked on them periodically it was always hard to count them with the mirror or cam I used but I swore there were only four. I would’ve seen something on the ground I would think.
These have the white above the eye so I think you’re right, they are Carolina. I’ve had good luck with everyone getting along so far, want to try and keep it that way. Never realized all the drama with different species before be interested enough to pay attention and actively help them.
Yes I think you’re right. It has the white above the eye so I think I’m good which is a relief.
Oh yea? That would be cool. Like I said, it doesn’t seem to be posing a problem. I’ll have to look at the differences online and check them out.
Thank you
I have this similar one I got from lowes. I used it in winter for nuggets. Blue jays and woodpeckers could get on it if there was a branch near it. Blue birds never went to it (who I originally bought the stuff for). But I saw them try it the previous breeding season and it seem like it was hard for them to land on when it was just hanging freely. I put it on the ground the other day and they went to it. Going to hang it up and try this weekend.
