I had that happen with a male. Found him on top of my pergola. But he had gouge marks on him from a hawk that was sitting nearby.
Your doing good with feeding. I don’t even worry about how many. He can supplement with insects and should because it’s healthier for them. But Carol’s rule of thumb sounds good.

Whoa, that’s a heartbreaking photo, especially since they are so developed. My attacks usually happen earlier. I would be enraged!! (As I know you are)

            Nice story.
I have purple martins, tree swallows and bluebirds and we used to have fireworks right near their housing and they didn’t seem phased by it.

David. The new way of putting on fishing line is recommended now and many people swear by it. The fishing line doesn’t hang like the old method.
I’ll find that link and show you.
I used the old method years ago and the fishing line worked well at first in keeping the house sparrows away but later the house sparrows seemed to adjust to it. I haven’t tried this newer method but several prominent bluebird people use it successfully.
I just do the sparrow spooker but may try this some day.
You’re supposed to just leave it on indefinitely and my concern is that the HOSP would get used to that.

They do slow down on feeding them a lot but he shouldn’t be gone. He should be in the trees making a racket calling them out. As others said, In my opinion They can’t live on their own after fledging. Usually the parents take them away and keep feeding them and teaching them to eat. They won’t make it on their own.
If he is truly gone I bet he found a new love interest!

Thanks, David. Thanks for the drywall screw comment. I have a couple of guards I made from a for sale yard sign. That way it doesn’t get soggy. She only laid 4 eggs. I thought for sure she would lay more. So far so good.

I’m curious how long are you waiting before giving up on the spooker. What I’m asking is what time of day do you give up and take the spooker off. You may not be giving her enough time. Is this your first time to use a spooker?
Your other options is to do the monofilament line method. I can give you a link if I can find it.
I have never had a bluebird not get used to a spooker. I’m sure it can happen though but I’m guessing it’s very rare.
You can cut and paste this link. It shows how to do that. I know there’s a diagram too if I can locate it.

I wouldn’t be able to watch that! I had a mom years ago with a broken or dislocated bottom beak. It was torture watching her trying to pick up mealworms. I finally took her to a rehab place and they ended up having to euthanize her. I never want to watch something like that again.

No. Not me. Sorry your going through that. I have asthma so I’d be concerned. I bet the birds will be fine though. ?? Is it just getting thicker and thicker?

Is the nest cup deep? The only worry is if the nest cup bottom is also near the opening a predator bird can easily grab the nestlings. I know from experience. But if the bottom of the cup is low and deep the tall sides don’t matter. Sometimes I have a nest where the base is too thick and I take off the bottom section of the nest and that works.
