I wouldn’t be able to watch that! I had a mom years ago with a broken or dislocated bottom beak. It was torture watching her trying to pick up mealworms. I finally took her to a rehab place and they ended up having to euthanize her. I never want to watch something like that again.

So what did you end up using to post photos? Just wondering if it’s easier.
So cool about your Great Crested Flycatcher. I would love to have one!Tammy
No. Not me. Sorry your going through that. I have asthma so I’d be concerned. I bet the birds will be fine though. ?? Is it just getting thicker and thicker?

Is the nest cup deep? The only worry is if the nest cup bottom is also near the opening a predator bird can easily grab the nestlings. I know from experience. But if the bottom of the cup is low and deep the tall sides don’t matter. Sometimes I have a nest where the base is too thick and I take off the bottom section of the nest and that works.

Where are you from Tim? I’m in North West Ohio and mine start picking out their nesting location in February or even earlier sometimes and they start building soon after that. I have a trio on a walking path and I already have eggs or nestlings in most of my boxes. I’ve been away from 2 weeks and I think some of my nestlings should fledge in a couple of days. Yours should have started earlier if you are at all south of me.

Can you pick her up and look her over. Usually I would say that she’s getting fed by the parents so don’t worry but it sounds like something else could be wrong. She’s either not quite ready to fly or something’s wrong.
Don’t give birds water. Here’s a copy and paste why. “Mothers do not feed baby birds water because their airway is on their tongue and they can not close it when you drop water into their mouths. This means you drown them, if they dont die right away they develop pneumonia and decline quickly without antibiotics.”You have to pry the babies mouth open in the corners to get them to open to feed mealworms. Sometimes you can lightly squeeze that area but I use the tip of tweezers and lightly put it in the corner.
You can dip the mealworm in water or better yet, Pedialyte. I can give you a homemade recipe.
But if something is wrong the baby will need a rehabber.Tammy
It’s not a good plan for any native species. That depth is not good. The house sparrow will reach in and pick up babies and drop them on the ground. I know from experience. I had a regular depth nest but a shallower nest would make it easier.
And that’s hard to believe. They nest in letters on signage and those have to be shallow.Tammy
Weird. Glad it’s working for you now.

Maybe they didn’t understand where to do that. I posted after not being on for awhile and I couldn’t find it either but it’s because I forgot where to find it. It isn’t really obvious.

Here’s someone’s predator guard. It’s similar if not exactly what you were saying.Tammy
Dave, hold up on making that. I’m getting feedback from people that I need to share with you.
