Sassy, the funny thing is that except for the bear people I live in a place with so many predators that my house looks absolutely insane. Snake guard, wren guard, sparrow spooker. Next year a raccoon baffle gets put on since they have decided to hang out here too. I’m gonna have to get really creative with the Kreuger trap and wobbling baffle as the snakes can climb a baffle with ease. Hopefully I can put the Kreuger on top of the wobbling baffle. Sheesh. This hobby stresses me out. LOL!
Thanks Gin and Sassy!
My worm feeder hangs on a small crepe myrtle and it really does look like a Christmas tree when they all come flocking!
Today was day 17 and should have been fledge. Of course I had to work but the weirdest thing happened. the parents even bombed when I put out mealworms! They got worms and only poked their heads in the house briefly but never went in.
My theory is that they were coaxing them out and didn’t even want me in the yard?
It was super strange at any rate. I hope to see them taking worms to the trees tomorrow.
Gin, I sure hope they don’t get the idea that it’s OK to lay eggs in Fairhope, Alabama in July ever again. But somehow it’s still in the 80’s every darn day!!!Am I the last one with nestlings? Bizarre!
Sorry for all the climate change people but it has beeen amazing to see all of these species here at once. If it is cooler in South Alabama I just can’t complain!!!
Day 13 for what had truly better be my last nesting. 4 this year! This is nuts but I just saw a goldfinch by the mealworm feeder! Off to buy thistle socks! Best bird year EVER! Though all backwards LOL!
I think they are chubbies! They have eaten hundreds of dollars worth of juicy mealworms. The parents are Much sleeker and less fluffy.

I love my goldfinches but they are only here in February and March and then on to “cooler” weather!
Isn’t it fun????
I get the hummingbirds for just a few short weeks before the head South over the Gulf of Mexico. It has never happened that I have had both at once. Normally blues are gone around June 1 and hummingbirds swing through in September!I’m ashamed to admit I’m getting the blues mixed up now but mama and papa are extremely distinctive and smaller than their giant babies!
I just saw this too and I could tell because it was world’s clumsiest entry ever. Soooo cute!!!!
It’s early days! Usually the parents will show up to get the worms to take to the babies, though. Hoping you see them soon!!
Thanks Gin! I thought I remembered you saying that before but I couldn’t find it! THey do seem to be cruising in and out easier now!
I’ve noticed now that I have so many blues that they are chasing off all of the intruders. It’s hilarious. And papa blue stays up in the tree while the older fledgelings and mama blue get their worms. Just in case they don’t know who is boss!
Box faces North. I am like you, I will be SO relieved when these guys are out! Fingers crossed daily! That would be a total of 10 new additions to the world after 4 nestings…A good year despite some heartache early on…
Thanks Carol! I did exactly that. I figured they needed to get used to daylight. So far so good!!
