So relieved to hear yours are OK Dene! Mine look great. I don’t know how they managed to survive the torrents of rain but they are all dry and happy and healthy!
Now the sun is out and we can get back to heat worries, LOL!Miraculously mine look OK! The rain was unrelenting and I could barely concentrate at work. Tonight is supposed to be the windiest so as much as I hated to I attached bungee cords to the nearest aluminum fence. Bad for predators!! Another sleepless night! Grrr
Thanks Gin! I figured I would just leave it. Before I had a box I could monitor it was common to find an unhatched egg left behind. Now I’m an obsessed nervous nelly.
So they made it through the storms last night but the wind is horrific and I can’t keep the wren guard on. They are 5 days old and it’s risky but I had to just leave it off.
Fingers crossed for you Meg!!
My dad took over immediately. He has been awesome. I think I would cry if I saw him chase one of the fledgelings from the feeder.
And this was the dad who took FOREVER to find a mate! he spent hours on top of that house with a beak full of worms before getting any attention! And I’m partial but I think he is extremely good looking LOL.
I think my fledgelings are all fairly independent now. They come to the feeder and hunt on their own. New nest is 4-5 days old hatchlings.Wonderful! it’s so impressive the work you do! From big trails to single box people we are in this together.
Great to read this!PS it sounds like mom is incubating the two so I don’t know how long you could interrupt this. This storm is super slow moving :(
And I promise the mom will get in that box and stay there.Anyone had babies survive through days of torrential rains? So worried!
I swear I’m taking up crochet next year!Dene, I have to confess we got about 8 inches of rain last night and I was so worried that at midnight I went out to make sure my box was still standing aand the wren guard hadn’t gotten soaked and plastered over the hole. It’s cardboard but too early to take off. It’s ragged but holding up.
But the craziest thing is that a juvenile from the first nesting was sitting on my snake guard under the house like the house was a shelter. In driving rain. We looked at each other like we were both nuts!
Today was terrifying. I work 35 mins from home at a hospital and we had 2 tornadoes come through and had to move all the patients to hallways. Thank God they were’nt near here. I don’t think any box could survive a tornado.
Miraculously I checked the nest this morning and it’s still completely dry.
I’m like you, been through a few hurricanes but the rain and mine only being 4-5 days old has me so nervous. How do they find bugs? The mealworm feeder was empty this evening so I hope it was the blues and not HOWR who ate them all and fed the babies. I hear chirping tonight so I’m relieved.
I’d rather have heat to worry about!!Now we just added to the warning zone. I am super upset and worried about this nesting. I though heat was my biggest worry and now this. Praying for all the babies!
Sorry, I misspoke. I thought we were in the middle of it. I am in coastal Alabama. Didn’t realize it hasn’t even come onshore yet! Our wind gusts are at 35. House looks OK so far.
Great thought Randy!
I’m right in the middle of the storm and left mine up. Don’t know they could have possibly fed them today in the torrential rains. They are only 4 days old. Luckily box was still standing but all I can do now is pray! wanted to check on them tonight but rain was blowing everywhere.
Fingers crossed for yours!
So far winds not bad just unreal rain :(My fledglings are so cute! Trying to peek at the new babies! But they can’t figure out how to get past the snake guard and wren guard. So they are sitting on the snake guard and sparrow spooker!
