Does anyone else get empty nest syndrome when they see the blues carrying the mealworms to the neighbor’s trees? I know I should be happy when they are out and living but I miss those little chirps when the parents feed them in their box!
Thanks Connie! I would be pretty surprised if they didn’t go for round four. I wish my vision was better and I could tell if they are the same pair as last year but they are acting exactly like them. I need to get my styrofoam ready just in case. So far this year they have wasted no time with repeat nests!
My family hates that I am so hard to buy for at Christmas so this year it is a nest cam….for sure! Xoxo! Lisa
Thanks Connie!! I just can’t believe I missed it by like an hour!!! Just my luck… Hope to see them at the feeder in a month, and maybe I will have one more chance if it’s like last year. Thank goodness for you-tube LOL.
Box is clean and ready for fourth nest. Kind of would rather they not as heat scares me but they always seem to survive it.

If it was a snake you didn’t lose mom. They get out of there and quick.
You aren’t snake proof with baffles. Ours can climb right up them. I don’t know if you saw my post on another thread but I dispatched a snaked from the iron fence 3 feet from my box who could have climbed over my Kreuger. And yes, they will try again. I plan to move mine further from fence and vegetation in case we have another brood. I just miraculously happened to be out late at night (11 PM) and catch mine. So sorry. But BBs keep on trying, especially after a loss.
I find that moving the house helps.
Good luck and sorry, I know the heartbreak all too well and learn something new every year, with every loss. I think this is my first year without a HOWR or snake loss. It’s nuts isn’t it Gin? But they were feeding them so much I thought they didn’t seem to be coaxing them out and gave up for a few hours. Put out more mealworms and they went next door with them. Oh well….One day!!
Usually they are dumb enough to come back the next day looking for more though!
Depending on your location I have had a snake do this.
Snakes. No way.
4 fledged. One unhatched egg. 13 new blues in the world this year. Looking at the bright side.
Aaaarrrgggh!!! I worked last night and stayed up until 11 am watching and waiting until I just had to take a nap. Got up and put out mealworms and they all went next door. Empty box. I was so bored hoping to see them fledge that I watched you tube videos of fledging before I gave up.
Why oh why do I always miss it?????We have super long snakes they call chicken or rat snakes. They have a great sense of smell. I never bothered a harmless snake in my life until losing those babies. It was heartbreaking.
Sitting here waiting, day 18, tapping fingers. They are just feeding them like crazy so I’m guessing not today.
I lost 5 15 day olds to a snake before so now I have a Krueger trap. The box is about 3 feet from an aluminum golf course fence and happened to take the dog out at 9 PM and a snake was curled upon the fence behind the box where he could have stretched and gotten over the trap. I thought I whacked it but couldn’t find the evidence. At 11 I just had a feeling and he was back. Gone now.
After theses fledge I am going to move the house further from the fence. May have a 4th nest this year…if they are like last year’s couple. -
