Matt, sorry to hear that the entire nest was destroyed. It is a good thing to clean out the nestbox after each nesting so the pair can build a new nest. Good luck on nest #2.
Phillieblues, that success with the HOSP population is good to hear everywhere. -85 is a tremendous number to take out of the population. Keep up the trapping or what ever you are doing.
Good to hear that your birds are okay also Carol. Do you have a plan for building your “sparrow-wpooker”? I have never put one up but I have noticed a lot of other sparrows (not HOSP) at my other bird feeders and just want to build on to use on the nest nesting. I so have a wren guard but did not put it up for the early nest as I did not see any wrens in the yard and woods at the time. they are here now but not bothering the bluebird nest.

Good advice Chris. The cold weather has had an affect on my birds also (delay of a day +. We got hit by the same cold snap that you had o possibly a little warmer but 4 days of night time temps in the mid 30s and lo 40s and day temps around 50.
Rich – as long as she is still brooding they still may be viable.

Chris. When you use imgur to post here use the “copy” button next to the “BBCode” item. That will take out all of that extraneous stuff in your post. the BBCode will appear like this as you type your post.

]https://i.imgur.com/xxXXyvR13DD.jpg[/img]) with an img in block parenthesis at the beginning. I had to take it out in order to show the code.
When you hit “submit” the photo will appear in your post.

    Nice photos by the way.

I keep telling myself that I should leave the birds alone so they can sleep and get strong. But when I take the mealworms out there is quite a draw pulling me over to the nest box to take a picture. So here is the photo of the little ones this afternoon. :bluesinbox:

Just like a new papa. Good to hear that mom bird is feeding. The Male will probably help also as they grow.

That is terrible Matt. So sorry for the loss of any for the nestlings. I would remove any of the fallen nestlings as soon as possible if the female is unable to get them out of the nest. You cant do much for the injured birds other than watch after the female tends them. If they do not survive you will have to remove them also.

I have not had that situation to deal with yet, so others that may have experience with the HOSP attacks may have better information.

    Good luck with the survivors.

Looking forward to the news. Do you have any idea of the number of eggs in the nest?

Thanks Judy and Carol. It is fun to watch the parents deliver the mealworms to the young. With my “explosion” of mealies. I am trying to include some of the small to medium sized worms in the feeder for them to use for the little ones. I am not sure how it will work but thought I would see if having access to smaller sized mealworms would assist in their search for smaller bugs for the young ones.

Congratulations on the hatch Matt. Like the photo.

By my count we have 22 out of the 36 eggs hatched so far. Mine are due Friday. I do not have numbers from several of our regulars yet.

in reply to: Oh no…….2 bluebird eggs, freezing temps tonight‼️ #8918

Good to hear the news about both nests, Judy. The weather has been strange all over. We have had freeze warnings the past 2 nights but everything seems to be okay. I did increase the mealworm feedings so the mama bird does not have to go so far to feed when she comes off the nest. I put a few worms out every couple of hours.
